What can be done to level the playing field?

Unpopular opinion but I think we need to meet students where they are and build from there. Bring back leveled classes. Students need to know that they are not the only ones struggling. They also need to be able to see a path to moving up. There needs to be the flexibility to move up and down in courses depending on performance.

While the kids are young, a love of learning and the value it brings needs to be emphasized. Kids have to internalize that doing well in school = doing well in life.

Within local communities, there needs to be evening homework/tutoring sessions. Kids need to be able to walk to these centers. They should provide a snack and a chance for socialization. They can't be viewed as uncool or only for the nerds.

Throw students out … to go where? Roam the streets and become petty criminals? The public schools are some of the lowest, last ditch places that kids can go to be fed, be under the care of reasonably responsible adults, and maybe learn to read.

This looks a lot different at 7 than it does at 17. We should put a ton of resources into early elementary education, especially for the students who are below grade level or otherwise disadvantaged. We should not be coddling high schoolers or even middle schoolers who are threatening other students or staff members, roaming the halls instead of going to class, disrupting classes, or selling drugs on school property. Give them a virtual option they can do at home to fulfill diploma requirements and let everyone who is showing up and trying to learn do so in peace.
