How long did it take for you to finish decorating your house?

DH and I moved to a single family house a year ago. We moved in with just a few pieces of furniture since we sold all our Ikea type furniture before moving so we could finally start buying some new stuff. Anyhow, we still feel that the house seems empty after a year. We have many empty rooms, not much on the walls, and the place looks more like we just moved in. I know it takes a lot of time to decorate a house and have it feel cozy, but I'm wondering how many months/years did it take you to finish this process? I'm thinking about 5 years probably.

It took about 5 years in our last house. Not that I wouldn't have loved to do more, but within our means I was pretty happy by that point. Then we moved. Back to square one.

We've been here 15 years, and it's still not completely done!

I will never be done. By the time I get to the last room, it will be time to go back and start over with the first room I did.

We just moved and it was easy for me because I never buy much disposable furniture (I'm not poo poo'ing Ikea, I have a few Ikea pieces) so we had an fully furnished small 3br house after moving from our 900 sq. ft. 1br+den apartment. I also decorate with things I truly LOVE so I don't get too sick of my decorative items and want a change. I have a lot of things that I rotate seasonally.

What I find makes a house look more "done" is art on the walls and rugs. If you don't want to spend money on art, get your very best hi-res family photos blown up and framed. Some black and white, some color. Ikea sells great faux gallery style frames (called Ribba).

Also, get your camera out and start taking pictures. Go to the park, take pictures of interesting buildings, flowers, plants, etc. Frame that stuff and get it up on your walls. That will instantly give your house some character.

Also, don't limit yourself to art. hang interesting plates, signs or found items.

Good luck!

Me too. And I don't buy "disposable" furniture either, but I find that my taste changes. For example, I'm trying to replace the oriental rugs I loved 10 years ago but now find too dark with natural rugs.

I don't buy "disposable furniture" either. But what sucks is now we have moved and our most favorite, most expensive pieces just don't work in our new house. We have the most beautiful cabinet sitting in the basement because there literally is not enough wall space on the main floor to keep it out without blocking a window. Ditto for a couch that was perfect in the small sitting room in our old house but doesn't match our family room furniture and thus doesn't work in our new house that has more of a great room. I knew the old house wasn't a forever house and I wish I hadn't invested so much in furniture that was perfect for it.

We just moved from our 3000 sq ft house, it wasn't done. We're moving into a 3,500 sq ft house and I bet we never feel done.

Oh and we were in the first place 6 years.
