Just smelled gas and realized the gas on my stove was on but unlit...my kid must have moved the knob for the front burner as he leaned against me while I was making spaghetti about an hour ago (on a back burner). There was no smell if gas prior to that, and I have a pretty sensitive nose. Are we in any danger if it's been an hour? The kids and cat seem fine and I am too. The windows are open and oven fan is on. Ugh.
If you turned on your fan and your house didn't blow up, you're probably ok. Next time, open the windows and doors, and get out of your house. Do not turn on anything electrical, particularly sometime with a motor like a fan. That said, unless you have a really old stove, you probably didn't get a lot of gas in the house. I think he new ones all have safety systems that keep the gas from flowing if you're not physically holding in the knob.
Ay, I didn't think of that...lucky nothing exploded when I turned the fan on.
Is it possible that it would have reeked like that if the gas wasn't flowing? |
It leeked, but probably not too much. It happens more often then you would think. Most houses are fine. It's usually ones that leave the main line open (no stove or drier attached) that blow up. That's what happened to the house explosion in Rockville last month. And that was on all night. You have the windows open and fan on, so you're good.
We had this happen and the stove had been on with a tiny bit of gas coming out (no flame) for several hours by the time we discovered it. With a newborn in the house. We opened windows, got out of the house, called the fire dept - and all was fine. They tested for gas and carbon monoxide I think and it was undetectable. Baby got checked and was fine. It's probably fine but if you are not sure call - better safe than sorry.
If you have gas appliances, please get an alarm!!!! http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R-100003545/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053
