Just wondering

Anonymous
how often you and DH have sex when trying? I have been using OPK's for about 4 months and we usually have sex 2x within 24-36 hours after a positive, but we haven't had any luck yet. Just wondering what other people are doing and if we need to try to ramp it up or what. TIA!

The 2X I've gotten pregnant we had sex 3 or 4 days in a row. I never had luck w/ the OPKs, though - got pregnant in the months that I didn't use them and just had sex around the time I thought I was ovulating. This time around, I'm charting, which doesn't tell you when you're about to ovulate but does tell you when you have, so you can see a pattern. The OPKs tell you when your body is making the hormone that causes the egg to be released, but it won't tell you if you've actually ovulated. I've read for some women it is not as useful as for others.

I also read a study that the most fertile day is the day before you ovulate, followed by the day before that, followed by the day before that, followed by the day you do ovulate. So since I usually have sex on Day 12, we're having sex on days 9, 10, 11, and 12. Sometimes its hard (we were sick 2x). Anyway, we're starting month 4, so I feel you're frustration.

Thanks for your reply. I am curious where you have read these studies? I would like to learn more, if you have resources you would recommend I would appreciate it. Thanks!

I found the study on the Taking Charge of Your Fertility website - tcoyf.com. It had been posted in one of the forums, I think the forum on charting. You can narrow your view of the forums to "facts only," and I think it was in one of the "facts" postings.

From what I've read, the LH surge detected by the OPKs precedes ovulation by an average of 12 - 36 hours. So that's quite a window -- especially when you add in the variation for when you took the test and caught the surge. It probably wouldn't hurt to DTD on the third day, in case the egg is a little on the late side.

I don't get a positive OPK until about 12 hrs before I ovulate. You might want to consider testing twice a day. Testing once a day can make you miss the beginning of the surge. That wouldn't be an issue for someone else that has more time, but 15-20 hrs can mean everything for someone like me.
