Here it is, once again. This is on top of the Virginia data and the Pew Forum polls.

It is inevitable.

Yes, wonder when the Republican Party is going to catch on?

Not anytime soon so long as old and conservative people vote in larger numbers than young and liberal people. The polls reflect the real-world shift going on; the votes on the issue reflect the views of the people who are crazy against this and tend (generally) to vote more conservatively.

Yes, but the population ages, and they aren't going to just switch one day. They will be stuck here twenty or thirty years later, just like they are stuck with a race problem.

Here is what I mean. The republicans keep beating the gay marriage drum to get out their conservative base. That's all well and good, but there are lots of small government independents who won't be a part of that.

So eventually over 20 years or so, gay marriage fails to be a significant draw because those folks get replaced by younger vote. They can rally a base, but it is too small to be important when it comes to elections. But they have nothing to replace it with, because they turned off too many people who would rather have govenrment out of their lives AND out of the bedrooom.

Sure race is still a factor in our life, but outright, open discrimination is so unfashionable, even the racists are unwilling to go further than calling any action to correct it racism.

Even now, most people are unwilling to admit they hate gays. It's now de rigueur to criticize the behavior, but to love the individual and want to "save" him or her. That's a change, and I don't think it will take 20 years for gay married couples to be common enough, thanks to the states that have legalized it, that even those who don't like it will find more subtle ways to bitch about it.

Or so I expect.
