Dumb question - is it "gauging interest" or "gaging interest"

The internet is not helping me. I'm pretty it's gauging, but that looks like I'm gauging someone's eye out or something. Feel free to suggest another word if there is one. Microsoft Word's synonym suggestions are not helpful either. TIA

To forcibly remove someone's eye is to gouge.
