Why did Obama skip the shuttle launch?

When this was sooooo important a few eeeks ago.

I know he is in Memphis speaking at a graduyation this afternoon but the launch was this morning. He and the press made a big fuss aobut being at the one that was postponed a few weeks ago but I guess he got his bump in the polls so he didn't have to piggy back the Gifford situation anymore...

You criticized his plans to go the first time. Now you are criticizing his not going? If he did go to the launch today, would you be criticizing him for it? I think we get it. Whatever Obama does, you oppose it. It doesn't matter what he does. You oppose it. At least you are consistent.

Don't oppose it, and I don't oopse him killing bin laden or many other things, just want to know why. I don't oppose him doing an NCAA tournament sheet, etc etc.

I don't know how graduation speeches work, but maybe he committed to this awhile ago, before the launch was rescheduled. If so, I think it would be in very poor form to pull out from a high school graduation ceremony. Those kids, whether they like Obama or not, would have been very disappointed.

It went up at 8:56, the graduation was at 1. I agree the kids graduation is more important but he made it to Alabama the same day he was in FL 2 weeks ago.

I don't think anyone can assume a shuttle launch is going to go off without delays. The scheduling would have been dicey. Besides, I don;t think he wants to set a precedent that he goes to every launch. He paid his respects to the program, and that should do it for a while. Next time he will probably invite the astronauts to his place.
