Yeah, remember after 9-11, the news was showing footage of middle-eastern crowds celebrating in the streets? It turned out to be stock reel of post-soccer-game partying, but certain Americans (ok, my mom) have never forgotten the visceral reaction that had seeing it, and TO THIS DAY talk about how Muslims celebrate when Americans die. THAT'S the rhetoric that the GW kids have handed the opponent. Well done, kids.

Wow, I saw those clips - never heard the follow up that it was stock footage though of soccer game partying. I thought they really were dancing on our graves.....

because it isn't true. what I remember seeing were huge crowds watching the replays of the towers falling on television and cheering and cheering. they weren't watching Man U vs Arsenal ....

That's because it's not true. There was a claim that CNN used stock footage from another event. This was false.

My sister was in Egypt on 9-11 and said she had never before feared for her life like she did then. She said there were crowds of people cheering and shooting rifles in the air. She, and the people she was with, and to be quickly moved from their Hotel and brought to a safe location. They were all then separated and quickly removed from the country. The group met up again in Europe before flying back to the US.

Conspiracy theories have already begun. Even if pic is shown someone will say that it was computer altered. The only way to prove he is dead would be to find fish, shark, who have had a taste of his flesh, kill fish or shark, and do a DNA test on contents of stomach.

I fully support our actions, but I don't see any reason for anyone to celebrate. In fact, I honestly feel it is sickening and cannot look at friends who were among the gravedancers in front of the white house the same way ever again. I know believe some folks got caught up in groupthink - who wanted to feel like they were and are part of something bigger. I guess I can understand this. But why check sensitivity at the door? Does it not occur to them that this behavior is inflammatory? Does it not occur that we should not be celebrating like this so long as our overreliance on fossil fuels and our other excesses have most certainly contributed to the unpeaceful environment we live in every day? Do they not realize that there will (WILL) be retaliatory strikes - if not here on U.S. soil then most certainly a higher risk to our business, embassy, and military personnel overseas? My dad is a doctor with doctors without borders. He is at greater risk because a bunch of assholes decided to take champagne to the White House. As if we've "won." As if this solves anything.

Make no mistake - this death is important and it is significant. But how in god's name is it cause for celebration? It simply tells me that bloodthirst is contagious.

This. The whole rejoicing thing is sickening. Someone was killed. Shot in the head. Others (including women) were killed. Multiple children were apparently there too and were probably scared out of their minds. I get that perhaps this needed to happen and that he killed many many more people, but I don't think rejoicing anyones death is appropriate.

Your politically correct diatribe is unbelievable. His wives were complicit in his terrorist activities and beliefs. As for the children, they will probably follow in his footsteps; already there are 12-yr old suicide bombers. I think the the entire compound should have been bombed back to the stone age after removing bin Laden's body. My heart is not bleeding for Osama, his wives and children, and his followers. How many wives and mothers were incinerated on 9/11. This is a case where I believe in "an eye for an eye."

They kept his sister's brain to match it against Osama's for years. Call me crazy, but i'm just going to assume they've kept his head and possibly a hand for evidentiary purposes...

This is fascinating. How did they get her brain? I did wonder what they had to do the DNA comparison.

She had died of cancer according to the London Daily Telegraph:http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/pakistan/8487374/Osama-bin-Laden-killed-live.html
They also have footage of the kill site...

yep, he was probably innocent. there is no war going on.

Yes eye roller. He was a war criminal, as such technically he should have been arrested and tried. The Geneva Covention is still in effect. There is a protocol. But personally, I am ambivalent--bringing him in alive would have been very problematic.

Geneva Convention does NOT apply to ununiformed non-state actors like terrorists.

One group's terrorist is another group's freedom fighter. Take it to the ICJ. You might lose. Btw, I'm actually completely fine with him having been taken out, personally.

Mark Twain.

+1

It's also very sobering. It would be nice if the WH crowd were ushering in some remembrance of how we felt and acted as one back then, but it sounds (according to NBC) like a bunch of people in their early 20s. I had hope until I heard they were singing "We Are the Champions."

This is why other nations hate us. I would have thought the economy and difficulty in finding a job after college would subdue that entitled attitude. Guess not.

I don't see anything wrong with it. I can't wade through seven more pages to see if anyone else has addressed this, but these kids have been living under the shadow of 9/11 and bin laden since they were old enough to be aware of the workings of the world. It makes perfect sense that this is a big deal to them. I think it's great -- and it's sad how many people say we should act more subdued out of fear of retaliation. Is that the kind of world we are willing to accept? Really?

According to the news reports, he was firing at us during the raid. I think that makes this all moot.
