After Monday

Nothing will really have changed by tomorrow in terms of conditions, but there has been so much bowback about closing today that I think they will open on time or maybe with a 2 hour delay.

Yes let's do. Closed. Same as today. Wed will be easier since it's going to snow even if 1 inch to add to already hazardous road conditions for bus transportation. Thurs could be same. And didn't check timing of Fri snow regardless probably another closure since it's probably not going to melt nor will they be finished chipping off the icebergs on narrow bus-route streets

Closed for two weeks....
You're ridiculous

PP isn't ridiculous. PP has looked at the weather. If MCPS doesn't want to open on a sunny day like today, 7 days after a storm ended, there's going to be a lot more closures this winter.

No Montgomery county what is ridiculous is moving the snow to block driveways instead of hauling away what are now boulders onto dump trucks

What does that translate to?

Did the sun melt away one cube of freezing rain on your house today, PP 15:00?

What progress was made today? Same for tomorrow.

"Snow and ice removal from this winter weather event has been slow, where Monday will be the first day above freezing in 9 days. MCPS crews have been working hard this past week and our facilities are ready to re-open! We know we will not have perfect conditions any time soon, but many streets and sidewalks are NOT passable for buses or safe for student walkers. Post-plowing snow piles are creating a safety hazard for our buses, creating poor visibility and blocking access to pass through and turn lanes. Many major roadways still have obstructions that have reduced lanes, making safe travel during peak traffic times difficult."

Bus stops don’t need to be exactly where they usually are. If the usual spot is blocked by ice, just walk 20 or 30 feet to the spot that isn’t blocked. Kids who walk have been walking around my neighborhood without a problem since last Tuesday. For kids with IEPs, if the family hasn’t cleared a path to the street, then they won’t get picked up. How is this different from any other dangerous situation on a student’s property? If your kid needs literal door to door service, then people have to be able to get to your door.

I posted on another thread that when my kid was getting picked up by the special ed bus, it tried going down our one-way street on the first day of school, and then the rest of the year, decided to pick up my kid on the main street at the nearest intersection, to avoid a lengthy detour through our neighborhood. Kid had to walk to the stop. It wasn't door-to-door.

So while MCPS may have just used a language shortcut and said all kids with disabilities when it meant kids in wheelchairs... I understand it to mean that they're using their special needs population as an excuse. And that's offensive to me.

Regardless, MCPS and FCPS will just have to come to the realization that they can't clear all the bus stops this week. Pressure will grow every day for them to re-open. They will end up re-opening tomorrow, or Wednesday, and claim that they made excellent improvements to bus stops, when in reality nothing will have changed from today.

It's all just incompetence and then trying to save face.

That’s great that your kid with SN could make it safely to the end of his block. Not all kids with special needs can. They shouldn’t have to.

I say this as the mom of a neurodivergent kid and the daughter of two parents with special ed degrees:

The number of SN kids who truly need door to door transport is so tiny that the district should be addressing their situation on an individual basis.

The entire district should not close because they have to make adjustments to how those specific kids get to school.

You speak with common sense and that does not fly on this board. 100 percent agree that an entire school district should not close because a few kids need door to door transport.

The school district gave 3 reasons. Students who ride regular buses, students who walk, and students with door to door transportation. DCUM is scapegoating the last group.

All those thing's will be true tomorrow too. I havent seen a county snow plow in 5 days.

I agree that not much changes between today and tomorrow but I think public pressure (and choices of neighboring counties) leads to MCPS reopening tomorrow. 2 hr delay.

Yes but parents are now really mad. They will find a way to open tomorrow with a two-hour delay.

Exactly where are the plows? A group of three were shoveling out a sidewalk at a busy intersection used to make wide turns on a regular non snowy day but it was absurd to see them including one who looked like a student hammering away at the blocks of freezing rain. In the wind. In lower temps than today. This is the state of the county. Half of county's budget is for MCPS. What's going on?

This.

Admittedly, DC, PG, and parts of NOVA were also shortsighted in that regard.

It’s going to take more than today to fix because the buses still can’t make needed turns in many neighborhoods.

If they open, they should send out a mandatory waiver that holds the county harmless for any school bus or walker accidents.
