Who is the AH here?

Why do you think they sent him $500? Just randomly pulled that number out of thin air? Is he a cashier who makes change or did they all just look up the flight they wanted and see the price?

Sure, points have value, but the value is different than cash. Sometimes more, sometimes less, but different. Clearly in this case the mother and sister feel like buying the tickets with points allowed him to make save money, and that seems like a safe assumption as he'd be an idiot to use points if it lost him money.

So yeah, mom and sis shouldn't expect a free ticket or to be given points, but they should expect to just be reimbursing son the value of what he actually paid. So yeah, he's definitely somewhere on the line of AH to tacky to bad communicator depending on whether he made a lot of money, just a little, or broke even!

So you think he made a profit but can't calculate it? Is it really profit then?

100% I mean, people wouldn't use points if it wasn't financially advantageous. So he very likely came out ahead. And you don't "make a profit" off of family members. Especially in a sneaky manner. It's tacky. That's why he's the AH.

Best case, it was a wash, but it still looks fishy. Either way, disclose, and most reasonable people, IMO, would say go ahead and use points if you want to. But don't be sneaky.

Why would his family, of all people, be so suspicious of his motives?

Maybe he's done shady stuff or taken advantage of them before and that's why they are suspicious.

They weren’t taken advantage of. They got the tickets they paid for, they didn’t pay more or get ripped off.

Know one knows how much they paid so they could have been taken advantage of.

You know the prices are posted right on the airline website. It's not a secret.

You know they frequently change and vary based on the website, right?
It's not a secret.

Where are you getting $500 from? Did you just pull that randomly out of the air? You're the only one who mentioned that number.

DS is not the AH!!! Those points are basically money! Did his grown relatives think he’d give them what amounts to hundreds or thousands of dollars in CC points for free? He could have used those for future travel, hotels, cash back, etc and just happened to use them for this trip. The mom and sister are insane if they have an issue with this an expected a gift of like a million credit card points so they could have a free trip

Is this OP's own son? Because she sounds like a trashy person.

Your inlaws make you buy tickets to vacation with them?

Believe it or not, most adults pay for their own vacations, even when traveling with family.

If you're travelling with cheap a$$ users, sure.

Because everyone always posts their family history here?

What? He profited off of it. Nothing nice about it, the mother and sister paid cash.

He didn't profit, he still had to spend money on his credit card to get those points.

He didn’t profit, but not because of that. He didn’t profit because he spent the points required for the trip. Now he can’t use those points for another trip and he can’t cash them in. The points are worth something.

Points for travel trade online at half value. Good luck.

WTH?

My bad, reading comprehension fail. I still think it's fine - he's using his points, which he accumulated by spending his money, to purchase the tickets.

Assume mom and sis sent amount of money they needed to pay for seats and if getting those seats on the flights they wanted, then doesn’t matter whether he used his points or their money. If mom and sis want him to gift the miles and not pay him for it, they are AH

Who sends money to someone before the actual transaction or getting a receipt emailed around? Wtf.

Is this whole $300 thing finger in the air?

Agree odd post or Troll

They find out later on that DS used credit card points to buy the tickets and kept the cash. DS claims he was going to use it for expenses on the trip. DD and mom are upset because it feels like DS made a profit off their vacation.

Who is the AH? Should DS send the money back?

What are mom and DD in charge of?
How are you paying for and sharing costs for hotels, cars, meals, etc?
What were you expecting once you found out DS used points for his ticket? A discount? Full refund?

Maybe Mom and DD can book a free timeshare lodging week and have all three of them attend the timeshare seminars a couple mornings that week.

That works!

Quid pro quo back at bro!

Anonymous wrote:If money sent = cost to buy tickets without points, then he did not profit.

He would have used those points himself for a future trip and no longer has the points to use.

I bet he’ll just stop traveling with them from now on.

WhoTF mails or gives cash to someone else to later book some flights.

Thats not what they are saying. He used POINTS. He bought them for "free" with his points he's racked up and pocketed their cash, the equivilant of what the trip WOULD have cost.

And he's not the AH, they are. They were willing to pay the same price for tickets. He chose to use his miles/points. Why do they care? As long as it was the price of the tickets the day they were going to purchase, it's fair game

Someone who doesn't want to deal with booking their own tickets? My MIL does this often. She hands the hassle of making arrangements off to someone else and pays them back. DP.

DS did nothing wrong. I doubt he will be agreeing to handle any future travel for his cheap mother and sister going forward though. I hope he wised up.
