MCPS is cutting ELC.

We had our open house and the teacher for my child (who was in ELC) said this year the curriculum is just the same CKLA as everyone else. I thought it was supposed to be accelerated? Has anyone actually seen what this is supposed to look like? So frustrating because ELC was so great last year

It sounds like they are using Model 2, which does not accelerate. They are supposed to provide enrichment in class to students who need it, but that's hard to do so unlikely to happen.

Model 1 is the accelerated standalone class.

If they are in Model 1 (cohorted class) there is supposed to be I believe 1 or 2 extra CKLA units and some extra projects. If they are in Model 2 (mixed class) there are no extra units, there's supposed to be some enrichment for qualifying kids but I don't know how that's supposed to work. Also both groups are supposed to get some extra enrichment activities during FIT time.

It’s supposed to be model 1, which I was very happy about. But apparently so far the teacher read them a picture book and not much else and honestly didn’t seem to be planning on doing anything accelerated whatsoever. I know it’s early days but it’s just so disappointing, they read so many great books and did wonderful projects last year.

I would wait until next week to see how things are.

If it's Model 1 then I believe they are required (or at least expected) to follow the accelerated schedule that MCPS has given schools, but it is also not so hugely accelerated that you would necessarily notice it, especially early in the year. The extra projects and reading assignments will likely be more visible but day 2 is just really, really early to expect to see that. My kid doesn't even start meeting with her Model 1 class the first time until tomorrow, the first two days were mostly just settling in.

It looks like this is the set of CKLA units this year for most kids-- the Model 1 kids should get one of the skipped units because they move faster, not sure which one: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1dA-LcquG3jhD92tGgfrG8US2GC_WYA7u/view?usp=sharing

My school is doing model 1. The kids are cohorted for the day including compact math. The teacher said they will get extra lessons in CKLA and they are starting a novel study this week. The class stays together for 5th grade as well.

I know it’s too early, I am sorry. It was just sad to hear my kid come home dejected because they had to listen to a book they would have read in preschool in their “advanced” class. They are just really frustrated - ELC was by far the highlight of their 4th grade year and all signals so far indicate that this year will be…not that.
