Is JMU on the rise?

I really hope that JMU stays at its current size. Feels just big enough without feeling huge like VT

You have to know northern Virginia to understand. Lots of overly-educated, very wealthy entitled parents focused on status and the prestige of the schools their kids attend. They believe UVA is Yale-caliber and very prestigious, most likely because it's the best they/their kids can do. UVA is a great school. But so are VT and JMU and countless others. Slamming JMU makes the VT and UVA grads feel superior and better about themselves.

This ^^.

One of my neighbors graduated from JMU in the 90s and went to Georgetown Law afterwards. She is a highly paid attorney who is also a proud alumnus.

I like the size of JMU too, but I do also have a DC at VT and was amazed at how *not* huge it actually feels. The campus is pretty compact, residential halls on one side and academic buildings on the other. You don't have to take a bus around campus the way you would at a lot of other big schools. My DC absolutely loves it there.

This is interesting. We toured JMU but we have not yet toured VT. Do students need to take a bus to get around campus at VT?

Oh my gosh, THIS. I am physically standing up and applauding right now.

No, that's what I was saying. They can walk to their classes and dorms. Once they live off campus, then yes - many take a bus to their various neighborhoods. But when on campus day-to-day, there's no need to take a bus anywhere.

Apologies, I thought you were talking about JMU.

No worries! JMU was like this too, if I recall. There is East Campus, but there are pedestrian walkways you can take to get there. I can't remember if shuttle buses were needed to get around campus, but I don't believe so.

I've heard good things about JMU and know some very highly placed individuals who are JMU graduates; I always hear about their business school being great. I haven't visited the JMU campus because, although it was one of the schools my senior applied to, he got into VT and wants to study engineering and VT was his first choice. I agree with your comments on the VT campus -- I was very impressed and liked it way more than I thought I would; it's a big school but a well-designed campus with attractive architecture and seems easy to get around on foot (although we may get him a bicycle!)

JMU is also very walkable! There are busses available but you definitely don’t need them to get around easily

+1
To me, these two schools are the perfect size. Large enough to find "your people" and not feel suffocated (as I did at my SLAC) but still compact enough to be walkable.

She’s an alumna. Not an alumnus.

Would you mind sharing what you majored in at JMU and how you got to where you are?
