how do we get APS to rethink 13 snow days?

Most APS teachers can’t afford to live in Arlington, so they live further out in places that are still digging out

I know, which is why I said that.

Totally- pay teachers more so they can actually afford to live here!

My kids are pumped. Core memories 😍

Ice is not a reason to delay, unless you’re talking about a uniform sheen of ice that falls overnight. Literally every other institution in our area will open like normal tomorrow. Buses headed for schools are not inherently more vulnerable to ice.

Yes it sure is. Ever seen a school bus try to get up an icy hill? Or kids slipping and falling ice.

Iced over 2 to 6 inches of rutted snow? After you.

The truth is ice is far more dangerous than snow ever can be.

The refreeze tonight is what's causing the closures tomorrow. Anyone who doesn't understand that is....?

The county offices, courthouse, and rec centers are all open tomorrow. Seems a delay would have made more sense.

Great, go take a jog tomorrow morning at 6:30 am and report back.

Teachers are commuting from FFX and beyond, their own kids schools are closed, and we pay less than other districts. Let’s not speed up the exodus of good teachers from APS

ALL public county school districts surrounding Arlington(Not DC) are CLOSED tomorrow.

I am glad it is fun for your kid. For the student parents who have to be somewhere for work or work a service job where pay is not salaried, this impacts their real wages.

Agreed. It's a real hassle for working parents. Just because you CAN take a snow day, doesn't mean you SHOULD take a snow day.

Kids 8 and older can be home alone. I certainly was for long stretches even younger than that.

So this is only a problem for K-2, so those parents one of you may have to use annual leave. Just like if kid had a sick day. It happens.

Arlington needs to retain its teachers, and this is part of the effort.

For an entire day? Yes and sick days happen and list wages happen for those parents. This is on top of that. Those who can least afford it are paying the price.
