Because that school shouldn't be in Ward 4, it should be in Ward 3 where it used to be. Duh. |
You can also look at SAT scores. And SWW has under 8% getting a 5 in math. 7.5% is fine but 4% isn't? I don't think anyone is doing this. |
white person here. no, it doesn’t seem weird at all to me. most white Americans have very little esposure to black MC/UMC culture, and it was something I was glad to learn about from living in DC and working at DC jobs with a lot of black coworkers & management. my kid is likely not Banneker material but I’d have absolutely zero reservations about sending him there. |
It's 1% at McKinley and 7% at School Without Walls. Is your view that the performance of all DCPS magnet schools is pathetic? |
?? I thought Banneker's IB program was limited to like 25 kids, no? |
Yes |
Ok, but the original comment was about what's keeping white families away from Banneker. It's not the difference between 7.5% and 4% getting 5s. |
I think one reason white families do not apply for Banneker at higher rates is because of the feeling that is the application school "for" high achieved ng black kids and that it is not fair for white students to take those spots. This is very much baked into the culture of the school and when there were fewer white families staying in DCPS through 12th it was less of an issue. But now more white families want to stay and there are not enough spots and academically challenging high schools so you see the percentage of white students at Banneker creeping up. If that number increased enough to change the culture if the school, I think you would see some unhappiness among black families. |
+1 I do think the school culture is predicated on being a place of achievement for black students. |
This is very true. It's also true that the surrounding neighborhood is a LOT more white these days, those families have opted into the DCPS elementaries, and the interest in Banneker from that group is enormous. They see the Banneker kids walking around the neighborhood and at Seaton (where they go to fulfill their community service hours) and there is a huge amount of interest in the school. So we'll see what happens over the years. I don't know what the ideal non-Black percentage is so that it can still be a place a Black excellence. |
Why is it that black people just can’t have something nice without others trying to intrude? They tried to disrespect Howard University by treating it as a dog park and now they’re trying to take Banneker High School. The black students at Banneker are doing fine and don’t need to be saved from those with a “colonizer mindset”. It doesn’t cost anything to just leave these students and their families alone. They don’t need affluent others on the PTO trying to change the culture of the school. LEAVE THEM ALONE. |
How on earth are you equating people using Howard’s grounds as a dog park with white DC children attending a DC public school? |
Isn’t this an artifact of the kids doing advanced math not taking PARCC for that course? |
troll |
Anytime anyone says anything supporting black people, it’s always considered a troll to some of this board. I’m just speaking the truth from a perspective of a black person living in DC since I was born in the 1990s. Has it ever occurred that high achieving black families want to send their black children to a predominately black school with other high achieving black children? |
