Your DD can wear whatever she likes. What most PPs are saying is that we are all judged for what we wear and teen girls are no exception. I see a teen girl dressed per your description and I usually think that they are vapid and don't have much to offer. In my experience, that has not been far off the mark and I've told my DD that you can usually tell which girls have something to offer and those that don't. If you're wrapped up in selling yourself as a sexual object don't be surprised when you are not viewed as anything else. The idea is to try to instill a greater sense of self worth for young girls and promote the idea that they have a purpose beyond male attention seeking. No one has said to cover your entire body. We're not pushing burkas. But the masses seem to think that the Kim Kardashians of this world are a great role model for girls and that's precisely the issue. Girls (and their mothers) support the notion that women have no place in this world unless you've sold yourself half naked. Shame.

Cardi B is an uneducated, former stripper who makes a living selling herself, and while she has made millions doing so, the former addict/stripper is not high on the list of female role models. But I bet your girls want to look just like her bc those are the images of females that the see. That’s the point. The types of influencer role models that young women aspire to are troubling.

Most people are followers. I find it hard to believe that everyone wore a unique dress when you were young -- maybe your friend group did, or maybe that's what you remember, but most people tend to stay in similar range. I'd say the only way to inspire creativity is to tell your girl to be the one who is willing to be different. Then she'll encourage those who are afraid to take more of a risk.

OP here. Yep, well I think she's going for unique. And completely out of left field she was asked by a boy who is about as popular as it gets (lacrosse star, etc). My daughter is pretty but also super brainy and artsy. This guy usually goes for the instagram-model, bikini picture-taking types. Not this year. It's funny. I think some boys mature with age and realize they can break the mold of what is expected of them too.

There are many age and occasion appropriate clothes for girls, but, if they are deliberately dressing to be sexy, well then, people are going to look at them because they are sexy, and the opinion about them will be that they want sexual attention. That is all.

Mostly the girls who are dressing like this are coming from messed up families and they are fair game to many boys who are also from messed up families. The generally decent boys and girls may judge them but they stay far away from them. They won't touch these people with a nine-foot pole because who wants to deal with a dumpster fire?

What seems to be the trend on this? My DD is not a heels girl (walks like a baby giraffe in them, prefers her "dress sneakers") but it seems like most of the Hoco pics I've seen this year have the girls wearing strappy heels?

My DD (in MCPS) said it was about 50/50. Her group of friends all wore sneakers or Doc Martens.

It’s not the length or the tightness that’s the problem. It’s the cheap material and cheap looking sparkles from stores that sell $60 dresses that look like trailer trash as you call it. You can’t help but look trashy in those dresses.
