If Sandy Hook didn’t spur a rethinking of guns in this country, nothing will.

Your pessimism is nihilistic and useless.

Yes, parents are now being charged. In Michigan, the parents were charged. Here, this seems a clear case to charge the parent.

Ok, that still doesn’t change anything. Do you think a wounded teacher will move the needle when classrooms full of dead kids didn’t?

Sadly, no. I’m sure the right wing talking point will be using this as an example of why teachers should be armed in the classroom.

- the teacher had gone to admin about this kid multiple times
- admin told the teacher to handle it and suggested a bunch of "interventions" that are not doable when you have 25 other 6-7 year olds in a classroom
- the parents were not receptive to suggestions from the teacher or school

100%. I’m willing to be it was all 3. Would also assume this classroom has been cleared multiple times

yup!

Jesus.

Does a six year old have the ability to fully understand what he did? WTH.

No, but it means he didn’t just bring a gun from home to show his friends and accidentally discharged it. He brought a gun to school to shoot it.

How did he know how?? Disgusting.

Um, screen time. They learned an awful lot about sex and violence home alone during lockdowns.

Would you stop crying about lockdowns.... this is not about covid. We had kids and adults acting violent and scary long before covid. ! You sound so ignorant!

I don't know. What do you do with a 6 year old who shot someone??

Probably foster care and intensive psych services. His parents are almost certainly to blame because they’d likely where he got the gun. 6 is too young to have real mens rea for a crime like this.

He told the class he was going to shoot her, that's what is being reported. He planned this in advance.

That’s awful. Last year, there was a kid in my kid’s second grade class who had a lot of problems and at least once threatened to kill the teacher.

In LCPS a kid drew a threatening picture of my neighbors kid (dying) with and the school did nothing bc it was a 3rd grader. Harmless they said.

What would you have them do? Serious question.

We all need to start taking threats seriously...make it mandatory that the child who drew the picture stay away from the other child. Offer weekly therapy....something has to give and happen-get the state involved-CPS visits something.

With regard to the debate on whether the issues around guns in our country are intractable;

I share the frustration of those who think the needle will not move, but that disregards the remarkable work done in the last decade by Sandy Hook Promise and other gun violence organizations including the young people’s movement initiated by the Parkland survivors. The needle is moving in a very big way among the electorate and that is going to have effects over time. It’s not fast enough and yes, American society has a long history of violence and gun loving and we probably cannot achieve the kind of things that have happened in other nations after mass shootings compelled sweeping changes to gun control laws.

and whet it turns out the family are felons and not legal gun owners?

Well well well…how the turntables.

The child got the gun from his mother, who was a legal gun owner.

Now what? No straw man for you to attack this time!

DP.. most school shootings are committed by people who had access to guns that were purchased legally.

Like I said to MAGAs, it's 2A 4eva.

that’s not even remotely true. The vast majority of school shootings don’t get covered by the msm. They are the types democrats ignore . Though it wasn’t a school shooting , 3 killed in a mass shooting in Philly last night. Only local coverage.

Do you have a citation for your claim that the vast majority of school shootings aren't covered by main stream media or is that just your speculation? Then you go on to discuss a "mass" shooting of3, that wasn't a school shooting. What is your point?

Well, Education Week has put together a tracker, and there appear to be plenty of links. To, you know, media coverage.

And 2023 off to a wonderful start ten days in:

Because the definition of school shooting that you have to use to get to several hundred shooting per year is not the same way that the vast majority of people define a school shooting.
