I wish the admissions folks at GDS would give a straight answer

Why can't they just say how many kids they've waitlisted for a particular grade? I don't see why they refuse to share this information. I find it annoying, obnoxious, and disrepectful. I do so wish they could just have rejected families, rather than give so many (50?100?150? Who knows?) false hope. Just do it the Sidwell way folks. At least then you know where you stand.

I fully share your point. Totally agree. Less hypocrisy would help a lot.

Just curious as to why folks need to know how many are on the waitlist at these schools. What information does it provide? It's not like it's a queue where your child may or may not be up next. Placing your child on the waitlist means (most of the time) that your child was qualified but that they preferred to give the spots to other children. If those other children don't accept AND your child is the next preferred child (whatever goes into determining that) then you'll get the call. Seems simple. No false hope. There is very little movement at many of these schools -- and definitely very little, if any movement, at this late date). Just assume your child won't get the spot and be pleasantly surprised if you get the call. Why are you still waiting? The schools aren't frustrating you. You're frustrating yourself.

It would help parents make a better decison about whether to apply again in a later year.

I don't know that knowing how many are on the waitlist will tell you much about whether you should apply again. The applicant pool changes every year. Your child changes every year. The odds of getting admitted could be very different from year to year. For example, I know several families whose children were waitlisted at Sidwell one year and rejected after applying again. If you like the school then you should apply again later.

We were waitlisted at a Big 4 and reapplied this year and was accepted. We decided to reapply because we really liked the school not because we were waitlisted. I think the school knew how much we liked it because we decided to reapply. If you do not reapply then you will never know what could have been. Stop stressing and plan to reapply
