We're considering Landon and St. Albans. The challenges (aside from actually getting admitted) are understanding the differentiators and determining whether to apply for 3rd at Landon without evaluating STA or waiting to apply to both for 4th. Anyone else considered this, and what did you decide to do?
I've read through the archives. There's much on STA and very little on Landon. I recognize that school choice comes down to fit for each child/family. But for those whose child was accepted to both, which school did you choose and what did you see as the major strengths, benefits, differentiators, or unique characteristics that made it a better choice for your child? Anyone think that attending the camp at either of schools will help get a sense of the culture or, better still, help our son figure out (on some small level) whether he prefers one over the other? TIA |
Well, I can give you my impressions traditionally. I grew up with many boys who went to both schools and will be looking fo my son in a couple of years. When I was growing up, St. Alban's was more diverse in terms of types of people. I don't mean only race (although, that was true) but also interests. Landon was very much a jock, "pre-frat-boy" kind of place. I know I'll get bashed, but they were the ones drunk at a party and getting in to fights on the weekends. Not that you don't have some of that at every hgigh school, but it seemed that St. Alban's had stronger academics and students who were athletic, but also those who were talented in other areas.
We chose Landon over St. Albans and are very happy with that decision. Our son is thriving, challenged academically, been encouraged to try new sports, and had many opportunities to express himself artistically. I know that there are some boys there who party a lot but OI know this to be true at many of the schools including St. Albans. What is important is finging the right fit for your child and your family.

We chose Landon for our son. One thing to keep in mind is that although both schools may have a similar number of openings in 4th grade, St. Albans reserves a large percentage for Bouvoir kids, so that they actually have fewer spots. And although both schools are very strong in academics and sports, and have a pretty wealthy parent body, Landon parents tend to be more homogenous and less diverse. We don't meet the criteria for the typical Landon family, but it doesn't bother us much -- everyone is very friendly and makes an effort to help your child have a smooth transition. And what a beautiful campus!
Can anyone weigh in on the arts program at St. Albans versus Landon?
