container gardening

Anyone do this? Any tips on when to plant? I'm just going to do various herbs, cherry tomatoes, and maybe some lettuce this year. Any tips on specific types of cherry tomatoes or lettuce that would do well in containers? Thanks!

I've done it with varying degrees of success. Best tip is use big containers, otherwise the soil dries up so fast it's impossible to keep up with watering.

Second the need for big containers.

I like Sun Gold cherry tomatoes.

Lettuce is a cool season crop that does well planted in the early spring (now is fine) and around early September. You can get seed packets that are a mix of lettuces, so then there will be something that should do well as long as the pot gets enough water.

You should probably mix in some granualar fertilizer into the potting soil before planting. Fertilizer spikes are another option. If you use water-soluble fertilizers, you have to fertilize pretty often, which I don't like.

You may want to google square foor gardening. We plan to try the same thing, though I'm afraid the stink bugs will ruin everything.
