Infertility Support and Discussion
|
Has anyone read about this? Apparently, PETA is having a contest to award one man a vasectormy "in honor of" National Infertility Awareness Week. After seeing all the protests, they have responded by changing their language from "in honor of" to "during" NIAW.

| I think most members of PETA are really young and radical. They don't plan to have kids (and usually mellow out and wind up having them later) at this stage and mock those who want to, but can't. It's much like the Amnesty crowd, who rally for human rights, but can't be kind to a person standing right next to them on the subway. They're all too into the ideology of animal or human rights to actually consider the personal feelings of actual people. |

Ugh, tasteless. I would bet, though, that they didn't even think about actual infertile people when they came up with this silly contest. Which doesn't speak well to their empathy, but I don't think the intent was supposed to be "ha ha you can't have babies stupid infertile people."
Still. Dumb, dumb idea. |
| PETA sucks. |
The whole point was that they were tying it to National Infertility Awareness Week, so it had to have been intentional. |

PETA's a joke, and it certainly was very aware of what it was doing - they made it QUITE clear.
I love Resolve. I wish I had a million dollars so I could donate it to Resolve - towards IVF treatments for the millions of couples in this country who can't afford IVF. Love that Resolve did a press release condemning PETA: (McLean, VA, April 6, 2011) In response to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animal’s “Win a Vasectomy from PETA” campaign timed “in honor of National Infertility Awareness Week®,” the following statement has been issued by Barbara Collura, Executive Director for RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association: “RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association condemns PETA’s trivialization of infertility, especially during National Infertility Awareness Week®. This attack is offensive and hurtful to the 7.3 million Americans who suffer from the disease of infertility. PETA has its own mission and there is no need for it to exploit a national health observance dedicated to the needs of women and men who simply want to be parents. RESOLVE remains focused on spending April 24-30 promoting a greater awareness of – and increased sensitivity to – the issues faced by women and men struggling with infertility.” For more information, visit www.resolve.org. |
You're right. I guess what I was (inartfully) trying to say is that I don't think that the *intent* was to mock people suffering with infertility. It was just some kind of idiotic tie-in. Like Resolve said, they're trivializing the issue. I guess I'm trying to give these folks somewhat of the benefit of the doubt...that may not be deserved, though. |
| Why is PETA interested in human fertility, or lack thereof? |
Exactly. I don't get the connection...I hope someone explains. I can't imagine why they would want to alienate a population of people from their cause based on nothing having to do with them. |
| Personally as a vegetarian AND a person who experienced infertility, this campaign doesn't bother me. But I can see why it would bother others. |

As a veteran of 13 plus IVF treatments and a PETA supporter, can someone explain what is going on here. I cannot figure it out from the posts (and don't have time probe deeper).
What exactly did PETA do? And how did they tie it to national fertility month? I truly want to know. Can some be specific on this? |

Can you not tell what's going on from the second sentence of the first post? I'm not sure it could be much more clear. I mean, you don't even have to "probe deeper," all you'd have to do is click on one of those links that the OP left, and then read for five minutes. |

Yep, definitely a "dummy" these days in my sleep deprived state.
Can you be more helpful? |
Let's not feed this troll any longer as it refuses to read the thread. |
