Don't send your child to UMd -- murder of UMd student at drug house!

Anonymous
Did you hear???>

Arrest in murder of UMd. student. Victim was living in a drug house. That's what they have at UMd.... drugs and murder. Don't go there and Don't send your child there... they will end up dead or selling drugs.

(using the logic of dorks who claim that UVA is unsafe b/c of the death of Ms. Love and VaTech is unsafe b/c of mentally ill guy, and WM is unsafe b/c there have been student suicides, etc.... just to support opinion that UMd. is "better."

I would venture to guess that living in a drug house anywhere is a risk factor, whether at UMd or UVa or Harvard. This is a very weird and somewhat irrational post.

It's not an irrational post at all. Have you read the irrational posts in discussions about Va. colleges and universities where a particular poster argues (over and over again) that the crime rates in Charlottesville, Blacksburg, Harrisonburg and Williamsburg are reasons that parents should steer their children away from Va. colleges and instead send them to UMd.?

That's irrational.

Crime happens everywhere... and UMd. is no safe haven.

(Not trying to dis UMd. -- just the dork(s) who claim that Va. college towns are unusually unsafe.)

Don't bother dignifying them with counterpoint responses - won't get you anywhere.

And dont let your kid go to V-tech because someone went on a random shooting spree...and oh dont let your kid go to UVA because some yuppy boy killed an innocent girl. Slippery slope much?

Charlottesville has 6 times the violent crime rate as College Park, Md...look it up. Va tech has very odd student on student crime..mass murder and decapitations. Uva had more murders on the lacrosse team than Umd on campus. Uva also had that horrible adbuction/murder at john paul jones arena. This is a drug dealer that got himself in a pickle way off campus. Nice try though!

Anapolis has EIGHT times the crime rate as College Park.... how many people think of Anapolis as a dangerous city? I think there is something skewed about the way the geographic lines are used for determining the "crime rate" of these areas. People who have gone to Charlottesville and Anapolis generally feel that they are beautiful, interesting (small) cities. People who visit College Park generally don't report the same.... it is an urban locale. U Maryland, I'm sure is a fine place to get an education, I'm not knocking it as an institution... but don't fool yourself that it's a "better" place than other college towns. Statistics can misrepresent the reality because the population of the larger geographic areas are not included.

I meant to type "Annapolis" == my mistake.

Its just that you have 6 times the chance to be violently assaulted or killed at Uva. Not knocking the institution though.
