Western High School Boundary Map options (A/B/C/D)

is no one else concerned with the push to adopt a flight school with this guy on the school board.

I wonder how much he'll profit by selling his program to fcps.

Does she have any idea of how disruptive her comments are? Look at a map. There is no world in which it would make sense to send Centreville kids that far.

I did not attend this meeting but I get the sense from past meetings that Reid thinks kids from other schools that won't ultimately be zoned to KAA will opt in to go there during the phase in period.

I think I saw a rumor that the new scenario will show no relief for Oakton and South Lakes. Maybe they’ll continue letting Centreville kids opt in even after the two year period.

"I think I saw a rumor"

Yeah, okay.

Well I saw it on this board.

He has been pushing for a “traditional” school.

The boundary decision doesn’t have to be finalized until June because of the clever opt-in policy.

But they’re going to have to make a bus decision soon.

Without knowing that, 8th-grade parents are going to have a really hard time deciding on a high school for their kids.

It has been mentioned many times before, including in the entire topic on his legal issues. Reid has mentioned partnering with the FAA and private industry to run some of the specialized programs. They have not announced the private industry sponsors.

Some parents are already discussing options, like carpooling if transportation is not provided.

If that is something you are worried about, ask the question. If you don't like the answer, you opt out. If you are fine with the answer, you opt-in.

It is like there is the laundry list of things that are an issue for some segment of population, and they want to use that to derail the opening of this school for some reason. There are families willing to accept the risk, who are planning to opt in.

I don't get why this is so threatening to some people. If they don't open next year, we have another year of people whinging and then complaining about the building sitting unused. There is no winning for FCPS.

Good grief. They already have several soccer fields. How many fields do you need? Carson has a baseball field. They do need a stadium. But, that can wait and they can use one from other schools for a while.
There are also park fields nearby.

Do you have any idea how little space Chantilly has?

The issue is, there's not nearly enough parking. So they'll need to figure that out and if you look at google maps you'll see the only place to add parking is where the soccer field is, so they'll need to tear that up. Unlike Chantilly they are surrounded by residential housing. There's a little wooded area, not sure if it's protected. How much do they need? Baseball (regulation size), softball, tennis courts, track and field, soccer, football stadium, and most schools have an extra auxiliary field or LAX field. I realize in the short term they can go somewhere else but long term I don't see that all fitting

What a selfish and entitled worldview you have.

It is almost like they want failure.

Here is the way it should work:
Delay/halt comprehensive boundary study--adjust schools in emergency situations now--like Coates.
Set boundary for new high school ASAP. Too many variables to open the school like they are planning. Way too iffy.
Staff school with full options of standard and advanced academics for 9th and 10th grades. Be sure and get good music and drama teachers, as well. The facilities should be very attractive to them.
Staff school with a crackerjack athletic director who should immediately hire coaches.
Open school next year for ninth graders. Too late to make tenth graders attend, I think, but that is what they should have done.
Following year, open with 9-11
Then, four year high school.

An additional program is okay if it is subservient to the traditional school.

Far more space than Chantilly and Carson is adjacent. Chantilly has had practices off site for decades and I doubt that will be neede. d at new school.

It doesn't matter what someone says, there will be the next issue.

They bought the school. The people I know pushing to delay opening are

I know parents who are choosing to opt out and attend the current school. They want the sports and the theater and the community that they know.

I know parents who are choosing to opt in and attend the new school. They are fine with the ambiguity and the fact that the experience is going to be different but are excited by the opportunities.

And then there are the people who keep finding issues that they are worried about because they want to stall it for whatever reason. None of those reasons seem to have anything to do with the actual school and everything to do with being afraid of what the new school might mean in 5-10 years for their current school.

At this point shouldn’t everyone be pushing for them to get this school up and running as quickly as possible, with full programming? If your kid is in eighth grade or above, this is not a concern to you. Your child does not have to attend the new school. If your children are younger, and you are pushing to delay the school, you are taking a big risk of messing up your child’s own high school experience. You might think that you are going to convince the school board not to send you there, but in reality there might be one or two who are sympathetic to your arguments and the rest you don’t really care. Alternatively, you could be arguing to stay at a school only to be pushed out of it in a few years when it becomes overcrowded. Either way, your continued fighting against the new schoolcould really come back to bite you.

The specialized program would only be open to students in the school's attendance zone, and a limited number of transfers who provide their own transportation. We already have AP focused schools, IB oriented schools, so now we'll have an aviation/aerospace/ai/robotics/stem focused school.

The superintendent will get her unique program to boost her CV, and the neighborhood will get their long awaited western high school.

+1 I am a Crossfield parent and I'm angry that these women claim to represent all of Crossfield. Just because they are loud and have a website (that changes day by day) doesn't mean they represent more than their group of friends.

+1 Those women drive me crazy. They are so wrong and elitist, and the thought process behind wanting to stay at Oakton makes no sense to me. I have a kid at Oakton and one at Carson, and hope we get drawn into Western's boundary. Let those mom's opt their kids into Oakton and deal with the absurd commute just so they can say they are Oakton students.

I'd prefer to stay at Oakton but fine either way. I don't think anyone other than Meren is trying to slow it down. If anything, I think they need to speed it up, but they need to be transparent with their intentions. They are losing trust by the day. Get the boundary ASAP. This should be done by Jan 1. Don't act like you need to hear comments from every Dick and Harry until June. Get the basic courses in place and teachers hired. Get parking, sports and clubs figured out. Get the renovations done. Then add the special programs, because no one is going to be building a plane within the next 4 years.

This!

The boundaries should make sense and solve problems. There is one option that does that. If others want to opt in, then, let them for the first year. No promises to siblings, etc.

This school is creating problems for Meren. That is why she wants to slow it down.
