Organic/non-toxic couch for toddler?

Anonymous
I want to get a cute upholstered chair or couch for my toddler's room. I'm having a hard time finding anything out there that's organic/non-toxic and was curious if there are any recommendations. Thank you!

OP. Geez...just thought I'd ask! I just want something for DC to sit on and thought I might as well SEE if there's anything non-toxic out there. You gonna bust because I cloth diaper too?

I think there are toxins in urine and stool. You know your child is sitting in TOXIC WASTE?

Who has time to go around posting nasty comments???

Organic toddler armchair (random Google search):

They specify that the inside foam is fire-retardant - good in case of fire, but toxic too. Fire retardants have been detected circulating in the bloodstream of young children as young as 18 months, due to the legal requirement of dousing sleepwear with fire retardant (unless the tag specifies either to wear the clothes snug-fitting or not to use as sleepwear).

I would just get a wooden chair, polished with non-toxic stain. Perhaps put an organic cotton cushion on top.

Wouldn't it just be easier to teach him not to eat the furniture?

I'm surprised at all of the ignorant and unhelpful responses. The OP has a good question, and if you haven't done the research to understand why or why not to agree- then don't post a reply. There are definite concerns about the use of fire retardant in children's products. Here is a link to a CBS news story on the subject: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/05/19/eveningnews/main4109418.shtml

The businesses that produce the chemicals want to endorse their good qualities and so of course they do not support the claims against their products. Flame retardants have been tested to show that they affect fertility and can cause neurological changes in infants and young children. We all have the chemicals in our blood because the government has been packing them in our products even after they were banned for a time in the 70s.

Is my toddler going to be trapped in her couch/chair during a fire? Uh, I would hope not. That would mean I tied her to it. Since everything else in my house will be going up in flames, I'm sure the chair won't matter. Personally, I'd rather have a chair with no treatment or non toxic fire treatments, which do exist.

I found this thread while looking for such a chair, so if someone has a helpful comment- please post it. Wooden is clearly an easy and good choice, but I'm curious too see if there are any already cushioned choices out there.

But the fire will spread much more rapidly through your kid's room without all those pesky fire retardants. You may have a good point but the "my kid won't be sitting on a couch during a fire" argument doesn't hold water.

We CD, use glass bottles, and all baby linens and sleep wear are organic w/o dyes. Why expose your child to unnecessary toxins?

I second the wooden chair, we're searching for one for our DC who is turning one next month.
