Pyschiatrist for medication management in NOVA

Anonymous
My DD has been in therapy for various issues for 18 months. It's become clear that therapy alone is not the answer. Her issues are complex and there are co-morbid conditions, so we really need someone to help us tease out some things and to find the right med/meds for her. She also reacts strongly/oddly to many meds, so having someone local is pretty important to us.

Does anyone have someone they recommend? I got a short list from our therapist, but I am interested in hearing about personal experiences from other parents. Thanks!

We see Dr. Oxana Jourkiv out in Fairfax. We live in the city so it's a hike for us, but since we only have to go periodically, it's not so bad. She is really great, caring, on top of things. We are very pleased with her.

We use Dr. Joseph Balzarett in Vienna/McLean. He's done an excellent job in helping my DS and my DH get their medications right. He's also in-network for BCBS-FEP which is amazing.

We are trying to find a psychiatrist that is in-network for our 7 year-old DS. Does Dr. Balzarett work with younger children?

OP here, thanks all!

To the PP who sees Dr. Jourkiv, she is pretty close to us. Have you seen any of the other docs in that office as well?

Yes, he does.

I am pretty sure he is not taking new patients. I have left messages on his answering machine for two weeks and did not receive a return call.

OP here. We have an appointment in a few weeks with Dr. Jourkiv. She is in practice with 3 other psychiatrists. At least she has pretty decent availability.

But the practice does not take any insurance. We will file out of network.

Dr. Balzarett is a godsend who has helped our two sons (8 and 11 years old) recover their lives from the grip of autism, mood disorders and OCD respectively. He's patient, kind, thorough and takes plenty of time to educate parents and children. I can't speak highly enough of him. If you're lucky enough to get into his patient list -- and I admit it took me quite some time as well -- definitely do so.
