Calling Korean parents- what is an appropriate present for a tol?

Anonymous
Going to a casual friend's son's tol soon and am wondering what to get him. I know traditionally gold is given, but what else should we give? We hang out every so often, as do our kids, but we are not close friends.

TIA.

Gold is very traditional, but not many people really do it anymore. I would treat it like any other 1st birthday and get toys, clothes, etc.

We received cash from Koreans, and toys / clothing from non-Koreans. Even a gold ring or bracelet will cost around $100. I wouldn't do that though. The family probably already got the gold jewelry for the kid (to wear as part of the whole costume arrangement), and will not need or want additional gold.

At my son's dohl, we received a lot of cash and gift cards ($50 and $100 denominations).
We also received typical 1st day birthday gifts like mega blocks, wagons, books, etc.
Just buy what you would typically buy for a normal first birthday party. No need to buy anything special because it is a dohl.

It also depends how close you are to the family. We've given $200 gifts as well as a $20 school bus toy for a girl I only met once.

Here's a "Korean" store in the states;

With my son, his family gave him the gold ring and cash, and everyone else gave regular birthday presents. We always give just regular birthday presents to other dol's, but my (Korean) Husband always wants to give giftcards/cash.
