Going on a tangent - but do you all know that Asparagus pee is real, but only a few of us can smell it?

So this just happened to me.

In the supermarket and my neighbor is in line in front of me. Buying six bundles of asparagus.

"Do you think this is enough for 20 people?" she says. "I counted the stems."

I died.

OMG I just saw that this post had 11 pages of responses and now I feel the need to read through because I'm wondering how asparagus serving size garnered so much attention!!!

I am so happy to see this thread, with its wonderful graphics, resurrected for Easter. I wish I knew the graphic maker IRL.

Depends whether they are thick or thin. I'd say 5-7.

Theologians have recently determined that Jesus had a similar quandary when he multiplied the loaves and fishes. The polled the apostles and they could not reach a consensus, so the asparagus was left off the menu.

Love. This. Thread.

End the debate. Poach the spears lightly. Wrap 5-7 (depending on thickness. It ALWAYS depends on thickness) in spiral of bacon. Broil for a few minutes to crisp the bacon. Your serving is a packet.

I looked up the Canada food guide. It states that one serving is about 6 spears. Generally speaking, for dense veggies one serving is 1/2 cup. So really, anywhere from three to six is a good serving. I'd go with 4 or 5, but I'm a fat Canadian.

Sadly, OP's dinner party is in the distant past. Asparagus has mutated and evolved since then.

To those who question why how many spears is a serving - no one has considered the fact that there are skinny spears like I like all the way to those thick beefy ones that have to cook forever to tenderize. I wish there was a weight to use vs how many and the only other answer was .5 a cup.
