So sad for Wisconsin today

Jeff, I've never lived or worked under a union-negotiated contract. Am I understanding that if I were to move to a state with a teacher union, you don't think I should be able to teach in the public schools without joining a union and paying union dues? What about people who think their work experience, degrees, and professionalism should be all that's considered? I have enough confidence in my skills that I think I should be hired or not hired, based on whether or not a potential employer thinks I can provide what's needed in a particular teaching situation.

You seem to be under the mistaken impression that the union is involved in the hiring process. It's not. The school administration will choose to hire you or not based on your qualifications for the job. Only after you are hired will you be expected to join the union. If that requirement is not acceptable to you, you should not apply for jobs in union shops. You wouldn't purchase a condominium and expect to use all the shared services but not pay your condo fee would you?

Truly, I had no idea that unions had that kind of control within the teaching profession in certain states. I can see how a factory worker trying to get decent wages, benefits, and protections, many of whom didn't have the educational background or experiences to negotiate that process, needed union protection. But teachers? No, I really don't think the condo comparison is appropriate. There are many housing options. I didn't realize that union shops controlled entire states. Guess I sound really naive, but I never understood before.

The unions at best have the power to provide some balance to the corporate money that has always has a powerful influence, and more so since Citizens United. If you look at Texas, you'll see an extreme example of political control of education that could sorely use the balance of a union,

It is in response to a big fundraiser these guys are coming to town for. Go to http://www.campaignmoney.org/march16 if you want to protest the corporate payoff for union-busting.

Hundreds showed up -- contingents from a batch of unions. The block of 13th between F and G was eventually cordoned off, and the rally ended with a march to the White House. I found nothing about it in the Post, and a Google search only turned up coverage on ABC News. Did anyone see any other news coverage?

One very visible group, very proper, in business suits, was the fire fighters, who were not even affected by the Wisconsin law; I even spoke to one from Oregon, where the governor and legislature are Democratic, so he is not threatened at all. Solidarity forever!

A Wisconsin judge has put the union-busting law into temporary limbo on procedural grounds: http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/03/judge-blocks-wisconsins-union-busting-bill-on-procedural-grounds.php?ref=fpblg

Wow, because conservatives never do that. Oh wait, they did after the Health Care Vote. And abortion votes. And when a black man becomes President.

The difference is that republicans do not issue death threats like this. And if they did it would be the topic of debate for 2 weeks of news cycles. It is funny how quickly democrats broke their own sanctimonious scolding and nagging civility rules. Where's Obama on this outrageous violation of civility?

George Costanza: Jerry, just remember, it's not a lie if you believe it.

They also break their global warming rules (size of al gores house/jet). They are really strange people. I wonder what their next stupid cause will be.

The next rule they will try to break is the rules of mathematics. The budget numbers will destroy the fantasy world they live in. This time the rules will win. Math doesn't respect screaming, nagging, complaining, dressing up in sloppy clothes and protesting, whining, anger, lack of hygiene. could get ugly.

I finally figured it out.
Lets force the republicans be teachers. They are the ones envying them the most.

Then the teachers can be teh republicans and politicians. We make them exchange wardrobes and bank accounts as well

I cannot understand why those teacher-envious ones have not become teachers.

You can keep paying teachers less and less. Your children will get what they deserve. Eventually the janitor will be teaching history, which I guess is fine to you if he watches Glenn Beck.
