Who is the AH here?

How did DS calculate what to charge if he used points?

Sure, points have value, but the value is different than cash. Sometimes more, sometimes less, but different. Clearly in this case the mother and sister feel like buying the tickets with points allowed him to make save money, and that seems like a safe assumption as he'd be an idiot to use points if it lost him money.

So yeah, mom and sis shouldn't expect a free ticket or to be given points, but they should expect to just be reimbursing son the value of what he actually paid. So yeah, he's definitely somewhere on the line of AH to tacky to bad communicator depending on whether he made a lot of money, just a little, or broke even!

So you think he made a profit but can't calculate it? Is it really profit then?

100% I mean, people wouldn't use points if it wasn't financially advantageous. So he very likely came out ahead. And you don't "make a profit" off of family members. Especially in a sneaky manner. It's tacky. That's why he's the AH.

Best case, it was a wash, but it still looks fishy. Either way, disclose, and most reasonable people, IMO, would say go ahead and use points if you want to. But don't be sneaky.

Why would his family, of all people, be so suspicious of his motives?

Maybe he's done shady stuff or taken advantage of them before and that's why they are suspicious.

My in laws do this but they are always up front that they are doing.

I'm on page 5 and I can't believe this has reached 11 pages. Many of you are idiots and seem to think that he was offered a discount or something and so his mom and sister shouldn't have had to pay full price. HE USED HIS POINTS. GET IT THROUGH YOUR HEADS.

Why isn’t mom paying for the whole trip? How old are these adult kids? Are they broke and yet having to pay for this vacation with mom?

Your inlaws make you buy tickets to vacation with them?

They weren’t taken advantage of. They got the tickets they paid for, they didn’t pay more or get ripped off.

Believe it or not, most adults pay for their own vacations, even when traveling with family.

I think if DS’s points enabled him to buy the tickets at a discounted rate, the decent thing to do would be to refund the excess to mom and daughter.

So you need a $/point conversion, but once you have that, if he was given say $800 cash to purchase 2 tickets, and he was able to purchase them for the equivalent of $600, then yes, the decent thing to do would be to return $200.

I don't believe it. My parents paid for me until I was successful enough to now pay for them. That's how most people I know travel who don't have wealthy parents who foot the entire bill.

There is not discounted rate to buy tickets. That's not how it works at all. You get a ticket for X points and other tickets cost what they cost. You don't spread it around.

Anonymous wrote:Money and points are essentially fungible. He used points he would have used at another time to pay for the trip. You're getting what you expected in terms of cost for the trip, so it seems like a silly thing to be mad about.

This. Mom and sister didn’t have points. They had to pay cash. Son decided it was convenient to cash in points for all 3 tickets and keep the cash. Mom and sister were never entitled to his points. Mom should be glad she raised a smart son.

No they do it together. Like my MIL and adult SIL will vacation together. They book flights using SILs miles and MIL gives SIL cash for using SIL's miles.

Know one knows how much they paid so they could have been taken advantage of.

You know the prices are posted right on the airline website. It's not a secret.
