When will you retire? What age, number?

We are old parents. The goal is to retire at 67 when our child graduates from college, 65 if we get lucky. We’ll have a paid-off house and a few million in retirement. We can move to a cheaper country where I have residence if necessary.

I’m 63 and could retire now with Fed govt pension $60K and $2.5 M in TSP. Hubs is retired with $7M in 401K, but he still is consulting so bringing in more cash. Thing is, I absolutely love my job so not thinking about retiring (even though DOGE sucks).

Stop being judgmental. He looks better than most 50 year olds.

dp.. they all start to look really older at some point, and he's 25 years older than you. Look at George Clooney. He looks like Ama's father.

His attempt to look younger with that dyed hair made it worse.

I hope your DH has great life insurance. You will then be set for life in your late 50s/early 60s.

I do not care about looks.

All of my friends complain a lot that their husbands are not helping either with housework or with children because they have a heavy workload. There is also stress about money, saving for college, retirement, etc.

I have an ironclad pre-nup by my lawyer, and the entire DH's estate goes to me in the event of his death or funds a comfortable lifestyle in the event of a divorce which he would 100% avoid at all costs.

$3.3M at 38 to raise 2 kids and through old age doesn’t seem like it’s luxury all the way. You will likely be fine but not living it up. Will your DH’s pension continue after his death?

Pension pays same amount after his death. We have $210k in 529 for both kids with college that is 11 and 13 years away. DH could have taken about $30k per year in SS that he is delaying for now as we do not need that income. House if fully paid. The $3.3 million in financial assets are currently paying $85k just in dividends (from both stocks and bonds) which is more than matching our expenses.

You live comfortably on $85K for a family of four? Where do you live?

I was thinking the same $85k covers kids' tuition. Food, insurance, clothing, extra curriculars,, vacations, etc are much much more. She probably lives in a small suburban home where vacation os grandma's and kids in public with similar incomes - so the don't ask for trendy things.

DOGE pushed out retirement eligible folks like you in my agency. May I ask you what you do? You obviously were not a target.

I plan to sell and downsize in about 3-4 years. One adult child in late 20s who I adopted when I was 49. Already manage lifelong complex health issues, so can’t travel, etc. My goal is to continue to enjoy living frugally and leave as much inheritance for adult child as possible. May also be able to do a very small amount of consulting to supplement. Admire everyone with more exciting retirement plans, but I’ve been lucky to love the work I did and to have been able to work this long in order to get child through college without debt and launched. I’m in a minority on this thread, but there are many paths like mine not represented here, I think.

+1. You go! Good for you. And good luck!

Not PP but in a similar situation but did DRP out. I absolutely was not being pushed out and could have stayed but my (career) boss was making life miserable and the money was too good to pass up. I was in a technical research job but not DOD/DHS/HHS so we were very much flying under the radar.

Hopefully 60. My youngest will graduate from college. As long as I can have health insurance, I would love to be done by then. Any earlier would be amazing.

My goal is 50-59, then work part-time before retiring at 60.
