Predictions Snow Feb 11?

Why would they need to close early? It's going to be above freezing. Any snow that falls will melt.

That’s funny bc I really liked getting it! It was informative, explained their reasoning, tried to calm people down about the fact that it MIGHT BE SNOWING at dismissal even if they don’t do an early release and it’ll be okay because of the air temps and likely decent road conditions.

Compared to how it used to be? Nothing at all until 5 am the day of? No explanations ever? This seemed like an improvement to me.

MCPS parent since 2008

I agree with you! But MCPS parents will complain if we get zero communication and also complain if we have a superintendent letting us know beforehand!

I had forgotten about the moment of joy. Ugh.

As an insider poster stated on a different thread, these statements are sent out by Communications team of Cram, Taylor and was it McGuire, or someone else? Remember it is Dr Taylor (EdD).

Almost every other school district has already announced dismissing early. Weird that MCPS is waiting.

Because MCPS' friends are doing it? That Howard county such a bad influence!

I would have more confidence in this if this new superintendent didn't seem to be lurching back and forth and having some major on the job training based on whatever nasty emails he gets and the most recent thing. It all just seems very flip and with poor processes. And I'm including the recent communication around staffing in all of that, not just weather decisions. The 2-hour delay/un-delay is starting to seem more like a symptom of something bigger than a one-off.

I very much prefer the new communication style compared to all the stuff we had before, since 2010, which is the year our oldest started in K. Now our youngest is in high school.

While I may not always agree with the weather-related decisions MCPS makes, I really appreciate the reasoning they lay out. It's more respectful to parents to explain how they come to a decision and what factors they need to consider.

There's no reason to dismiss early. Roads will be fine into the early evening.

Me again. MCPS' move is surprising, because usually all our school systems err on the side of caution. Snow might or might not start to accumulate at around 4pm. Some late elementary school kids are still getting bussed home at that time. Roads will be jammed with drivers getting home a little early.

I'm not against it. Just interested.

They are clear about not closing early. Just that afternoon activities will be canceled.

No they are not. They are leaving open that possibility.

I think afternoon childcare will be open, particularly if they close early. Kids whose parents don't pick up can be sent there and parents can pay after-the-fact.

Yeah I don't think that's how it works.

They can't just hand kids that aren't registered to the childcare provider.

I agree.
