Replacing all baseboards, window and door trim

Around $10k is a good estimate, assuming you don't have anything fancy. That would not include painting.

You will want to see the work of the guy you hire for this. Doing corners nicely is an art. Most carpenters do sloppy corners.

It depends on the trim you choose. Trim alone is pricy. We DIY'ed ours.

We always do this and it's an easy DIY (if you can paint, nail gun and saw). Crown moulding is harder, baseboards are easy. I prime the boards, paint two coats, then DH cuts and puts them up with a nail gun. Then I fill all nail holes, caulk and paint another coat. Caulking is KEY. We spend probably $500 a bedroom and that's just for materials, but I know wood is more expensive now.

Getting the larger baseboards really makes a room look nicer, those tiny 2-3" baseboards are cheap looking. We couldn't reuse either because we went from carpet to wood and our baseboards were destroyed by the carpet installers.

Instead of replacing door trim I normally sand very well and repaint. But we have pretty nice door trim to begin with.

anyone done this recently?

I am LONGING to get rid of our cheap looking baseboards. Thanks for the nudge!

I would hope it would be cheaper - one of the biggest scams of the 2020s is builders using cheap flat baseboards and trim instead of beautiful founded and/or stepped moulding. The reason "modern" baseboards look the way they do is because it's cheaper, not because it's more stylish. You've all been had!

Are you handy at all? If painted baseboards, learn to DIY and buy a miter saw. For ease, you can purchase pre-primed wood. I also paint one coat before installation and then a touch up coat following installation. Crown molding is much harder. Crown molding makes me feel like I missed some essential math class in high school 😳

What’s the best paint for these items? Can I use something hard wearing, for instance for kitchen cabinets? I feel like repeated paint jobs over trims over time get very sloppy.

I don't trust so-called handymen around here... they all seem incompetent in my experience.

I can’t even find someone who knows how to recaulk a tub.

I recently completed ~1k linear feet of baseboards, door, and window trim.

It was a PITA and very time consuming and I consider myself extremely handy. But damn it looks good and we get complements regularly.

I would skip redoing the door and window trim if I had to do it again.

I went with Home Depot contractor pack pre primed moldings, one coat of behr marquee semi gloss before install and one after, along with 3/4x3/4 quarter round for the baseboards.
