Recommendations for Greenville, SC

I’m not terribly familiar with Greenville but I’ve been there for a few short visits and thought it was lovely. Certainly you can find enough to do for a weekend. If you like baseball there is a minor league that plays in a stadium downtown.

What's with all the trolls on this thread? Though I prefer Asheville, Greenville is a lovely place to visit for a day or two. Given how red it is, I wouldn't want to live there, but for a short visit, it's a nice place.

If you're into beer like me, hit Eight Street Brewing or Birds Fly South. Top notch beer.

Greenville, SC is lovely! There are many great restaurants. Mary's at Falls Cottage is a special place, lovely atmosphere and views and great food.

Greenville is such a cute place! I think it would be fun for a weekend.

Might sound odd, but their zoo is really nice. It's small scale but has really nice exhibits, it would be fun to walk around there.

Restaurants:
Biscuit Head (my favorite)
Tupelo Honey
White Duck Taco

Definitely make a stop at Fiction Addiction (bookstore) too!

Swamp Rabbit Trail, Falls Park, MAST general, drive into the foothills and hike Caesars Head or Table Rock, walk around the beautiful campus at Furman, eat a big classic breakfast at Stax Omega and then have Stellas for dinner.

Ditch the Airbnb and stay at one of the numerous nice hotels downtown. They are very affordable and walkable to all the fun stuff downtown. We enjoyed the Embassy Suites, and it had a nice Ruths Chris you can order room service from if you wish to avoid dining out in crowds.

Several nearby state parks for hikes. Swamp rabbit trail, the falls, tons of great eateries. We live a couple hours away and visited recently for a weekend and loved it! Be warned that it was packed, the hotels and restaurants were packed. But it was fun, and a very vibrant little town. We were pleasantly surprised to find a place like that in the south. Also the locals were very friendly. We’d go back in a heartbeat.

I love MAST general.

We have both been to Asheville several times.

We are focused on Greenville because neither of us has been there before.

Any suggestions?

The reason you aren’t getting many comments is there isn’t that much to do in Greenville. You can go to the small falls and bridge downtown and then you can walk up and down several blocks of the downtown street where there are restaurants. That’s about it. It’s not a destination.

The CDC is still telling people who are vaccinated that they should not engage in nonessential travel at this time. If you go to Greenville you can probably eat out at restaurants, etc., but you will be surrounded by people who don’t wear masks and haven’t gotten vaccinated.

It’s a bizarre destination.

Why must people be so judgmental about locations? We picked Greenville because it is an equidistant drive for both of us. We have been to all other larger cities in the area. We enjoy visiting places that aren't huge tourist draws and I had seen articles in the last few years in the NY Time and the Washington Post so it seemed worth checking out. We have always been able to enjoy ourselves in every place we've been. I was just wondering if anyone had any specific recommendations.

We drove through SC once. I have to agree with PP. It’s a bizarre destination.

And you know that because you drive through it once. Got it, I definitely trust your judgement then.

Greenville is awesome! I live here but I’m originally from NYC but I love, love living in greenville. It has an awesome downtown. COVID has kept a lot of the fun spring events closed but there is so much to do here. Swamp Rabbit Trail is great, Falls Park is gorgeous. If you like baseball check out the Greenville Drive minor league team. It’s a Red Sox affiliate and the stadium, Fluor Field, is designed like a mini Fenway Park. Westin Poinsett Hotel is centrally located on Main Street and there’s also a Marriott, 2 Hyatt hotels also on main with many more off of main but still downtown. They’re building a huge Grand Bohemian Hotel right off of Falls Park. Not sure when it opens though.
The theatre scene is great too but not sure what’s open. Gather GVL is an open air food stall/bar spot which is fun. There are so many good restaurants- Rick Erwins, Tupelo Honey, Pomegranate, Grill Marks, Sobys, Nose Dive, Halls Chophouse, Husk, Jianna, Larkins, The Lazy Goat, Roost, etc. Swamp Rabbit Cafe is fun to ride a bike to.
There are lots of spas too. Village of West Greenvillle is cool too. Restaurants like GB&D, Coastal Crust, Bar Margaret, The Village Grind, The anchorage, Neo Burrito. Some art studios too.
Have fun!!

You’ve gotten a ton of good recommendations. I’ll only add that the Peace Center has great performances ans the whole downtown area brims with good food and activities. The Greenville County Museum of Fine arts has the largest collection of Andrew Wyeths (ans is where I flirted with MicHel Stipe a long time ago.) Thr Mary Praytor is a must visit if you’re strolling downtown. Drive up to the mountains and have a drink at Hotel Domestique and visit Carl Sandburgs home ans the cemetery where Thomas Wolfe is buried.

Perhaps you and the PP missed the articles in the Washington Post travel section.

I always think it is funny when people recommend restaurant chains for people vacationing when we have one locally. Just go to Tupelo Honey in Arlington.

Greenville has been a hotspot of covid throughout the pandemic. My estimate is that they will continue to have relatively high covid numbers.

Also, it’s not all that. It’s fine, but it’s not nice enough to risk covid for if the numbers are still high this summer.

I’d either change your plan or make all your plans are refundable so you can see how the numbers are once the time is closer.

100% this.

Not to mention a friend's daughter just had a baby. They went outside to get fresh air recently and a moron screamed at them for wearing masks. She just had a baby!! They have lived their whole lives there and were so upset.
