In DC, I like Baked and Wired.

In MD, I like Lilly Magilly.

I'm with you - I find bakery ones devoid of taste or maybe just too mass produced? I feel like anyone who can bake can make a better one!

Homemade - yes. Out of a box - no

I like the cupcakes at Buttercream Bakeshop. My favorite are the ones with lemon cream cheese frosting. They're only open for custom orders right now but if you have a large enough order...

I loved Baked and Wired but not their cupcakes for some reason. I do like Georgetown Cupcakes. And as someone said, Lily MaGilly's in Md but only their vanilla flavor.

Thanks from OP. I have never loved anything from Baked & Wired but so many cupcake recs maybe the cupcakes will convert me. I am meh on Georgetown Cupcake. I wish Alexandria was closer to me, would love to someday try Buzz etc.

Appreciate the recs.

Red Velvet cupcakery in Chevy Chase (formerly also by Verizon Center and in Reston Town Center). The best. I miss being able to stop by every weekend when they were out in VA.

No. You're doing it wrong. Box mixes are very good cakes.

Baked & Wired cupcakes are good, but heavy... like a muffin is how I would describe them, maybe because they are also less sweet.

Georgetown is more classic indulgence cupcake — light and with sweet buttercream.

We had vanilla cupcakes from Best Buns last week and the frosting was amazing. I haven’t tried other flavors though.

My favorite cupcakes are from Sweetly Anchored in Cabin John mall. I’m not a fan of heavy buttercream frosting and theirs is more like Swiss meringue. Also only doing custom orders though.
