He is appointed not elected. School board elections next year I believe. |
Hutchings was hired by the school board and can only be fired by the school board. The entire board needs to go and only partly because of the response to covid. And yes, election this fall. |
I don’t know if you’re at our school, but I know I overhear teachers regularly saying “So and so we haven’t seen you in a while!” and when logging in I usually count less than 20 squares which includes 2-3 teachers and a class of 22 students. Where are these kids? It breaks my heart (and we are struggling, too, but at least we’re showing up). |
C’mon guys. Are you really surprised that ACPS screwed this up? There’s a reason the City has as many private schools as it does. |
I mean, if they are not going to send the kids back, they could at least make virtual better. My son is in sixth grade and has had 10-15 minutes of homework total, for all classes, so far this year. It is ridiculous. |
It’s past time for them to reassess the current DL model and evaluate it to make meaningful substantive changes, especially if kids aren’t going back into classrooms anytime soon (which doesn’t seem likely). This is not working. My kids aren’t learning, they are simply spending all day staring at small squares of faces on screens. Not sure mine can go on like this much longer. If they remain DL for Q4, I think we’ll pull the plug and call it a wrap on the 2020-2021 “academic” year. |
Gosh, no! The writing was on the wall last march when there was zero communication from teachers at our school and the principal didn't understand what the problem with that was (thankfully he departed for Ohio a few months later. Good luck to whatever school district got him). And then the failed roll out of their "mandatory" summer program that you could opt-out of. Such a mess. Anyone remember the summer when at every SB meeting Hutchings talked about how everyone was going to pat him on the back in the fall? At first it was annoying and then it became joke. The lack of self awareness with that guy is stunning. |
I don't mean to be snarky but have you tried addressing this with the principal at your son's school? Posting here doesn't seem like the appropriate venue if your goal is to get this situation addressed and rectified. You haven't even named the school. |
There are only three schools with sixth grades in Alexandria. He goes to one of the two big ones. The principal is not going to change anything. It would have to be addressed separately with each of my son's six teachers. |
It is the principal’s job to address your concerns with your son’s six teachers. |
I am guessing that your kids are younger and that you do not have kids at a large ACPS middle school. I can't even get his 504 plan implemented, but luckily, since there is currently so little substantive work, it does not matter. |
Really pissed that they were vaccinated before the elderly in the city who have to, you know, LIVE as a priority. |
This. Well except we are in a small ACPS elementary school and it all falls on deaf ears. Nothing changes no matter who you talk to (we've been thru the teachers, principal, and central office). |
Reading these makes me feel very privileged to be at Charles Barrett, and also fearful for my child's future in ACPS. |
My parents are in their mid 70s with underlying health conditions and have lived in the City of Alexandria for 40 years. They have not been able to get an appointment with the City to be vaccinated. Neither have some of their friends who are in their 80s. |
