Get rid of as much furniture as possible unless absolutely sure it will fit in your new home. Of course, hold on to family heirlooms.

We moved houses and states and basically I had one week between places and jobs....it was stressful....

Dont try to find the perfect second home for your unwanted or maybe wanted things, just get rid of them all one way or another.

Dont hesitate to get rid of things you are not sure you want to keep. I think we got rid of half our stuff in the last move and I honestly cannot tell you what we got rid off. Haven't missed any of it, obviously, since I dont even remember what we dumped (except for furniture)

Do an amazon order of essentials to arrive the day you move in--groceries, toilet paper, towels, whatever you will need for the first few days.

Everyone focuses on the packing up--rightfully--but I found it was really helpful to have some things ready on the other end. I hired an organizing service to unpack the kitchen, bathroom stuff and linens when we arrived, which meant that from day one, we could eat, cook, and sleep. A team of 4 did all that plus all the clothes in closets/drawers in a few hours. If you have younger kids, this is a good thing--i had the house unpacked and their new rooms and things all set up before they arrived, so it was less dislocating.

Have a plan B in case your stuff is delayed. Hotel or air mattress or?

Remember to use space wisely: Keep clothes in dressers, use bedsheets/blankets to wrap things (like glasses, vases). You can always wash them on the other end.

Has anyone used a local auction house to consign furniture before moving? I know of Alexandria Auctions and Quinn's Auction Gallery but not sure of any others.

What was your experience? How much did your furniture end up selling for? Would you recommend it?

It’s not clear if you’re packing by yourself or not. If you are, know that there are so many awful boxes and tapes out there. U-Haul tape was great and Home Depot boxes worked well.

1) When you pack think about when the last time you used each item when considering whether to move it. Aside from a small number of keepsakes, items that I dont use dont get moved more than once.

2) Put good labels of what is in each box. Dont just say "kitchen" Say: pyrex glassware, silverware, hand mixer, recipe box. This makes it so much easier to find things when you have just arrived. If your items are going into storage for any length of time, even better.

3) Uhaul + local movers on each side to load/unload the truck is really affordable way of moving. I am a single woman and Ive done it up and down the east coast between DC, Boston, and Philadelphia. Uhaul's website has a service where you can hire the local movers along with your truck; Ive found it very good. Even if you dont use Uhaul, you can go through their process online to get an idea of what local movers will cost.

4) I prefer medium boxes over large ones. They get so heavy so fast.

Also, make sure you have cash on hand to tip the movers.

I created a color-coded labeling system by room/floor (destination address) and also packed an 'open first' box that I kept with us, in addition to all the vital records.
