That's probably old wallpaper. It's so much better today.

I think it's dumb when people shortchange themselves today because in 5-10 years their tastes may change. If someone is in love one with of the gorgeous wallpapers out there right now and they have the means to use it, why not use it? Why paint and kinds like the space? They'll probably want to change the color/decor in 5-10 years regardless. Do what you LOVE now.

what's considered old wallpaper? Our house is 20 years old and the original owners wallpapered the bathrooms. I want to get rid of it, but keep delaying because of the horror stories I've heard about removing wall paper. I know we could hire professionals (and may do that), but we have a whole list of projects that will need professionals so I'm trying to tackle what I can do myself.

Old as in multiple layers starting from the 50's when the house was built. DIY. Save the money.

I said that initially but once we got ok with installing wallpaper its easier than painting.

We put the black and silver version of this paper in our powder room and are obsessed. It makes it feel like you’re in outer space.

I'm the PP with the old paper (in every room of my house). Removing it takes time, but not skill, so don't be afraid to just start peeling. Get this to peel (https://www.google.com/shopping/product/12580481295561079852?q=painters+tool&rlz=1CAYBVP_enUS676US676&oq=painters+tool&aqs=chrome..69i57j0l7.3411j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&prds=local:1,prmr:2).

Get as much of the paper layer off as you can. In places where the paper layer won't come off, score it with this (https://www.acehardware.com/departments/paint-and-supplies/painting-tools-and-supplies/paint-scrapers/17756?x429=true&gclid=CjwKCAiAxKv_BRBdEiwAyd40N8umHDRei6LS1qFVzIv-lyyp8QwljBs9nQ6621WV5cBxv3tgqClDhBoC4AkQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds).

Working in small sections, spray the wall with hot water mixed with fabric softener. Give it 5 minutes and scrape the paper and glue off. Then scrub the wall with a large sponge and hot/warm water. Prime and paint.

The scoring heavily damaged our walls and left marks. I found a steamer at times better and spraying at other times worked best or just dry scrape.

I love this one! In wallpaper or curtains!

NP here with an entirely greige new house that needs help. I've been undecided on paint colors for the powder room for months, but now am really thinking wallpaper. Thanks, OP!

I love the A Twitter someone posted above and the Raphael one and Hyggee and West ones. All different styles but they all make me feel happy.

I removed a lot of wallpaper in an old 1900 era house -- I think most of the wallpaper had been put up in the 60s. The stuff in the bathroom came down like a dream -- basically just peeled off due to the years of steam. (I think those walls were also drywall, not plaster, as the bathroom had been renovated in the 60s, I think.) The stuff in the kitchen and one bedroom was an utter disaster. The walls were plaster and the wallpaper had become one with the plaster, so big chunks came out with the wallpaper, and I had to patch walls, etc. So old wallpaper on plaster is probably the worst. That was also in New England, so probably a less humid climate than here.

I absolutely adore this. Any idea where it's from or how much it would cost? Would it look weird to do just 2 walls in a small living room that opens to the foyer (it has three walls, but one of them runs into the front door and foyer, so I couldn't really do that one, I don't think.) Too much for a whole room? It's the piano room so there's not actually a lot going on in there as far as furniture.

I am loving this, potentially for our powder room:

I have wallpaper and am ready to have it installed in my mudroom. It has some tricky areas to work around, so I'd like to have a pro do it. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance!

Ask on your local listserve too! Neighbors may be more forthcoming!

It’s a Schumacher wallpaper/fabric (butterfly something — just do a google search). If you don’t do the entire room, just do one wall (accent).
