We are strongly considering leaving after swearing we would be in the city forever, but we just need more space and a backyard which we won’t get in the city. Would really love to hear about others’ experiences.

No one. Native NYer here. None of my friends. It’s a big fat lie. Only people who moved to NY after college for a job for a few years have left.

+1. Truly depends on the circles you run it. It’s going to sound annoying but we live in the West Village and are all either native New Yorkers or have been here for 15-30 years and have creative jobs that pretty much only exist in the city (restaurant owner, business owner, auctioneer, etc.). We own and send our kids to private school and most have a house outside of the city. Of my circle, I don’t know anyone who has left for the suburbs. Why would we?

I’m the native New Yorker who moved to westchester. Lived in NY suburbs my whole life and attended college in the city. Most of my friends are from the same background and all have moved/will move. But it probably does depend on circles. If you can afford a decent size apartment, private school and a summer home, it’s somewhat more compelling to stay if you don’t mind sacrificing living space and city living with kids.

The point is, a lot of these people don’t have to give up living space to live in the city.
