| Another vote for Ranger's Apprentice. It's made for kids like him and there are a TON of super-long books in the series so he can read and re-read to his heart's content. |
Thanks! He read the first one but we didn’t know there were more. |
| Thanks so much for all of these great suggestions!! I just put a bunch on hold for curbside pickup at the library. |
| My 5th grader has read and loved a lot of the same series and he has loved several series by Margaret Peterson Haddix — Shadow Children, The Missing, and Children of Exile. |
| Chronicles of Chrestomanci and anything else by Diana Wynne Jones |
Yes!! My DD loved them so much last year (6th grade) she actually read them again a second time this summer! She also loved the series listed by OP, but surprised me by branching out a bit, too. Here are some other series she's liked: Chasing Vermeer Hunger Games Divergent Spy in the Silver Palace, by Jordan Rivet (and another of Jordan Rivet's series - not sure which one) Just an FYI, I haven't read any of these except Hunger Games, so I'm not sure how violent they are or whether they include any overt romance/sex or other more YA themes . . . . |
| Unwanteds! Sounds right up his alley. |
Second the Alex Rider series! I legit enjoyed reading these myself and when I taught 7th grade, my students devoured them!!! |

Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper
The Three Investigators series by Robert Arthur, Jr. Narnia series by C.S. Lewis Green Knowe series by Lucy M. Boston Sisters Grimm series by Michael Buckley Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot and/or Miss Marple books |
| Another vote for Keeper of the Lost Cities. |

The Promise of the Wolves trilogy
Wings of Fire series |
| Both my kids have read most of the books you listed. They recommended: Ender's Game, Divergent Series, Hunger Games Series, in that order. |

OP here. Thanks so much again for all of these great suggestions. I really need them now that school is online. When he was going to school he could visit the school library and read stuff in the classroom library.
He finished the Hunger Games and really liked it. I put a lot of the other recommendations on hold at the library for curbside pickup. So far the first book in Alex Horowitz / Stormbreaker series was available and the first Ranger's apprentice. He read both of those and asked me to get the rest of the books in both of those series. I actually want to read Divergent myself, too, haha. I read the Hunger Games myself (years ago) - I haven't read The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes yet - has anyone read it? Do you recommend to both of us? |
| Ranger's Apprentice, Brotherband, Red Rising |
I haven't read it yet, but DD (age 13) read it this summer and liked it a lot, though not as much as the orginal three books. |
