Movie that parents will love but appropriate for kids also

A movie that was a hit with everyone in my family was the Martian.

Yep, Wall-E for the win.

But OP, does your sister generally like animated films? If she's just generally not into them, you're not going to do well with any, even great ones like this.

I actually would engage her and have her pick the movie, since it's really about finding one she will enjoy. If you pick one that's not really her cup of tea, she'll be polite, I'm sure. But if you really want her to have fun, I'd tell her the plan and make it fun to choose the film together with everyone in mind, especially her.

As much as people on DCUM keep referencing "classics" from the 80s and 90s, kids today simply do not like these movies. They move a LOT slower than movies from the past 10 years, they contain unnecessary exposition that does not move the story forward, and the effects are outdated. It's very difficult for kids (and adults) to get immersed in old films and film is supposed to be an immersive experience. A League of their Own?! LMAO!

My kids did like a League of their Own, as well as Princess Bride, Apollo 13, and Monty' Python's Holy Grail (we skipped the scene with the virgins). I agree that many older movies have a slower pace that kids today don't like, though.

I surprisingly really enjoyed Spiderman Into the Spiderverse. I also really liked Song of the Sea (Irish independent film -- slower than U.S. kids' movies but my impatient kids were drawn in).
Something like the female Ghostbusters might be fun, but not sure if you would think it was okay for the kids.
I've been wanting to watch the Tom Hanks movie about Mr. Rogers, but my kids haven't been willing to watch it.

I think it really depends on if your kids are boys or girls. My female nieces enjoyed Princess Bride but my sons wanted to die during most of it. I think especially boys these days are used to IN YOUR FACE constant stimulation from media. I'm not saying it's a good thing. Into the Spiderverse was an amazing film, especially in 3D. I definitely agree that adults and kids alike, presumably of all genders, would generally really like it. On the flip side, my sons really liked the movie Alita (Battle Angel) which has a strong female protagonist and tons of violence as well. Adults were also very caught up in Alita. My dad who falls asleep in almost every movie throughout history (he's now 70) actually stayed awake, eyes glued to screen, throughout the entire movie. This guy fell asleep during Terminator 2 and Jurassic Park including the T-Rex scene.

DP. Love it, but not sure if the seven-year-old will be into it. OP? And OP, does your sister like space movies?

It's hard to make suggestions without knowing what the sister prefers, since OP says the sister's preference is key here.

Second. I'm 50 and just watched this with my 6 yo grandson and it was way better than expected. I really enjoyed it!

50 yo grandma here again. Another good one was My Spy. I actually ended up watching that one more than once. Maybe the pandemic is melting my brain but it was quite entertaining.

I was very surprised that my 7yo sat through this, and astonished that she’s watched it a few times since. She loves it and calls it “Mark Watney Space Butt.”

Goonies has a lot of bad language. Probably not the best choice. Although my kids were probably seven and 10 when I put it on for them not realizing how bad the language was.

If they haven't already seen it CoCo. Also Sing and Zootopia. DH and I loved these as much as the kids.

I feel like there's a difference between looking for a movie for adults where you'd feel comfortable with your kids in the room, and looking for a kids movie that adults can stomach. A lot of people are suggesting the latter, but if it's a party to celebrate an adult milestone, like a birthday than a movie that is aimed at the adults seems appropriate.

If it's outdoors, the kids can get up and go play, or stay and watch, or whatever. They don't need to be catered to every minute.

I have watched (and loved) Freaky Friday and Parent Trap (both with Lindsay Lohan). Also loved Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.
