Like any chair, some are made better than others, and you get what you pay for.

Not entirely, in that there are comfortable and ergonomic children's chairs for less than extravagantly decorated gaming chairs. You pay for the "look", not the quality.

Like for everything else.

There are cheap ones and expensive ones both with "the look." Like everything else.

I'm pretty sure this is the one my kid has, but it has been a while since we bought it.

We have the Vertagear S-2000 and it has held up well. Wayfair has discounts and a lot of choices. Pay attention to size -- some are huge and designed for overweight men. There are also Junior sizes if you are looking for a pre-teen.

When he is an adult and makes his own money he can choose which things to waste money on.

In the meantime I will make the choices about what frivolous things he will get and I can't fathom buying him a gaming chair.

There is a reason marketing in the US is a multi-billion industry - there are people willing to waste money on just about anything.

Cool. So what frivolous things will your DS get? Maybe those are things that OP's DS doesn't want. Did you look at the gaming chair? The idea seems a bit silly to me too, but once I saw what it actually was, I can understand why a middle schooler might want one.

OP, if the cost is similar to an amount you might otherwise spend on a gift for him, and it's what he really wants, I'd go for it. As others have said, even if it becomes a total bust, it's still a desk chair that can be used, or even resold.

Thanks guys...went for it. Found one that looks great for about $100 and will be used mostly at his desk. He'll be happy

So your kid doesn't have a desk? It's just a desk chair.

Meh. PP just wants to sound superior. There's nothing wrong or inherently frivolous about these chairs just because they're called "gaming".

You can find quite a lot of info about gaming chairs here https://www.cwhonors.org/best-gaming-chair/ . This article helped me to get one and I am completely satisfied with the choice. And also I want to mention that having a good gaming chair significantly improves the whole experience so it is a worthy upgrade.
