Another vote for The Stand.
Scariest for childhood me was 'Salems Lot. |
The Stand is one of my all time favorite books, just not SK book. |
I loved 11-22-63 but it's a bit of a departure from King's other books style wise. I haven't read most of the classics since I was a teenager but the ones that stick out to me are The Shining, Salem's Lot, and Needful Things. |

Another vote for The Stand.
Different Seasons is interesting because two movies generated by it -- Stand by Me and The Shawshank Redemption -- are as close to the novellas as any movie I've ever seen track a book. |
Dark Tower series, especially Wizard and Glass (but start from the beginning of the series)
The Stand ‘Salem’s Lot Shawshank Redemption from Different Seasons The Eyes of the Dragon |
The following Richard Bachman ones:
The Long Walk Rage The Running Man |
Salem's Lot. The Stand, Night Shift, Skeleton Crew |
Different Seasons or the Bachman Books. |
NP, I guess I'm going to have to read The Stand ![]() SK books I liked. Carrie Misery Thinner The Shining The Green Mile serial novel Christine |
Oh, so many!
The Stand Christine (I couldn't care less about cars and LOVED it) Mr. Mercedes (that one's the best by far but the whole trilogy is pretty good - they're amazing as audiobooks, Will Patton is great) The Dead Zone Deparation The Green Mile Dreamcatcher Under the Dome 11/22/63 Duma Key (although I'd listen to this one as an audio book - John Slattery is SO good) Just listening to Pet Sematary now - Michael C Hall is great Revival The Outsider Hearts in Atlantis - this was SO good The only one I've ever disliked was Cell |
NP, but no! It's so good! |
Everything’s Eventual. Short stories
Pet Semetsry It |
Full Dark No Stars was a great collection of short stories. I usually don't like short stories but I think Stephen King is one of the best authors at drawing you in right from the start. I've had other books where I feel like I have to force myself to keep going until I get hooked, but with his I'm hooked from the get go. |
I've read almost everything of his and in addition to the books already mentioned I enjoyed a few he published in the 90s - Bag of Bones, Dolores Claiborne, and Insomnia. On Writing is really excellent if you are interested in his process or are an aspiring writer. |
