I agree to get the amino at Fairfax hospital. |
Which hospital were you at? Id want to know how good the MFM
Is before panicking. I’d also want one super experienced for the amino. |

OP here - I lived in DC previously but have since moved, so I wasn't in one of the local hospitals and unfortunately can't go to Fairfax for the amnio. |
I would relax, OP. There are SO MANY errors on genitalia during ultrasounds. At 20 weeks, they said my baby was a girl. We bought girl clothes and a pink stroller. He turned out to be all boy. It happens all the time. |
Hey OP, if it does turn out that your fetus does indeed have ambiguous genitalia, know that many people who live happy and successful lives despite being intersexed. It is not a disability. Read up on this please! |
OP, I lost a baby to a genetic defect. Absolutely get more info sooner rather than later. Get any info you can.
IMO a short life full of pain was not something I chose for a baby I wanted more than anything. It has been my pain to suffer ever since. Get the best of the best to advise you so you can make loving decisions. |
I don’t think this is as true when there is an inconsistent blood test |
I’m sorry for your stress and hope everything is okay. I would get the amino. I’ve had 2 and they really weren’t that bad. |
+1 My ultrasound technician saw a 3 chambered heart for my baby, confirmed by the doctor which would have meant a high risk pregnancy and a number of surgeries once the baby was born. So they rushed me a Georgetown neonatologist who did more in-depth diagnostics to confirm found that my baby had a 4 chambered heart pretty quickly. But $15,000 later (thankfully covered mostly by insurance) and a few months later, I had a healthy baby. Ultrasounds can be wrong. |
Get the amnio. |
+1 for a 2nd opinion! Some ultrasounds are very, very limited and some are 3D (we saw cross sections of DD's heart and organs!). Then if you proceed w the amnio, make sure that you are aware of options for localized anesthesia (and that you get the anesthesia if you'd like it); it wasn't offered to me (the doctor just stuck the needle right in, no pep talk, nothing) and I went into shock it hurt so bad. It was only after the experience that I learned from other parents that anesthesia was an option, and everyone else I spoke w had it w the amnio. Best wishes & hugs to you and your child, and your (plural) family |
Get a second opinion. For major medical decisions, always, always, always get a second opinion. And a third if you need it. Or more. |
Personally, I’d get the amnio. For me, only getting a second opinion would still leave the first opinion in my head, and I’d want to KNOW, despite the risks involved.
That being said, U/S are not necessarily definitively reliable, as they depend on a lot of factors for good imaging. A second opinion is not a negative thing. |
I would absolutely get the amnio.
No matter what the diagnosis is, I wish a long and healthy life for your sweet baby. |
