She goes to winter swim practice and does what the coach says to do. |
Yes, I posted about the playground. If anyone is interested about long term athletic development and is on Twitter, give this guy a follow. He's from Connecticut I believe. @JeremyFrisch |
Wow, this is excellent! Thank you for this! |
| Speed could increase some with sprint coaching to improve form. Only miniscule stamina gains are possible pre-puberty (at which point massive gains become possible), so I wouldn't spend any time or effort chasing them at age 8. Completely agree with spirited games of tag for general athleticism (and joy). |
| Avoid video games and twinkies and go outside and play soccer, b-ball, tag, etc. That should be sufficient at that age. |
| Probably too young for this now at his age, but when our son was in 7th grade, we enrolled him in a speed and agility training program. He had a very weird running style- they video taped him running on a treadmill and slowly worked on correcting his running form. He went from about 12-13 mph to 19.5 mph in 8 weeks. We’re considering enrolling him in another session this summer(he’s now in high school). They design each child’s program based on what sport they play and what they are looking to improve on. |
| If your kid is 4’ 10” and 80 lbs at 8, he’s huge. Strength and endurance will take some time. |
| If a kid is already really fast at age 10-11 does that usually last or are there often big changes at puberty? |
Those are great results! Who did you use? TIA! |
It could and it could not. A 10 or 11 year old is not fast when compared to a 14-15 year old. One thing will be true as he or she continues in athletic. Everyone gets faster. I remember a girl who was super fast at u10 ....at u11 she was just fast...u12 just average. |
My kids are now super fast. They weren’t in the little kid years- just average. They were highly skilled but always on 2nd team because of this. Once they hit U13/14- it was a complete game changer. Left for first team at a much better place. |
| My slow 8 year old is now a slow 12 year old. He has tried speed classes (his own initiative) and they helped some but not a lot. It would be nice if puberty changed things, but for some kids I do think it's just genetic. I remind him all the time that it may seem really important right now with recess and sports but being a fast runner is really not one of those things that will be important for or to most people later on. |
It was actually prior to relocating here from the Midwest- but it’s called Athletic Republic. I believe there is one somewhere in Maryland, but we have not tried the location here. |
Just heard some parents that encourage swimming in the summer to increase cardiovascular endurance. Having never had my DS do swimming, outside of PeeWee swim to learn, where do you start? How many times a week? Or just go to the rec center and have him swim laps. Not sure where to even start looking...rec center has once a week classes..is that enough? |
My daughter has always been fast but since she started swimming year round this year- she is faster and faster for longer.. her soccer coach commented on it yesterday. She swims three times a week for an hour for the year round swim team and will swim every day for 6 weeks for the summer swim team. Is he a good swimmer already? If not- I would put him in a class or on summer swim team to get the correct stroke knowledge. |
