who would YOU go about organizing years of digital photos?

- most recent year first
- picture books for key events - one for each family vacation
- picture book for the rest of the year and limit to about 5 pics for the other, non-vacation events - like Halloween birthdays kids events. This gives you about 2 pages per non vacation event.

I started in February. I’ve done the two family vacations for 2018. Not I’m working through the year.

I also take advantage of the MK thly free prints and throw them in a box by year. Fun for the kids to look through.

My hope is to be done by December and just order one new picture book a month.

I’d use Shutterfly but I hate hate hate their interface. When you print books do you do any editing and arranging? It sucks!

I've tried them all: shutterfly is the best.

I’d be worried about them going under though. Google seems safer in that regard.

I think they have a strong market segment, they contract with Target, Walgreens, and CVS for same day pickup in an hour. Also less risky and more secure than Google for me.

Their interface is the BEST for photos. You seriously need to check out their redesign and timeline feature. They auto make photo albums for you. Its not bad anymore. It's actually amazing. when is the last time you tried it? It was horrible 10 years ago.

I cannot believe all the digital hoarding on this thread. What are you going to do with 70,000 pictures as time goes by? Exercise some discipline, pick out the best pix for photo books, then push “delete.” It will set you free!

I’m the pp here and agree with their new interface. I used to use mac photo books and loved them. When they stopped using I went with shutter fly.

I did edit more on my Mac, but now I’m more focused on getting a decent book done in the limited amount of time that I have. Shutter fly does that for me. I find their app very easy to use.

This is not a helpful feature. You just end up with pages of blurry photos that should have been deleted — or way too many pictures of playing in the ocean.

Related question- once I’ve backed up, most interfaces ask if I’d like to delete the pics from my phone. Is there a way to delete all the pictures off the camera roll or photos or wherever they are stored but NOT delete my favorites? I’d like to keep my favorites to save high resolution in case of larger prints.

I think the best way to save favorite originals is old school folder file on your hard drive. Select all favorites in album. Drag to hard drive folder. Then backup. Then delete all. Miller favorites from the dike folder.

On an iPhone if you delete the base library file it will delete the favorite file too. Alternatively you could create an iCloud library album with your favorites. It won’t delete when you delete files from your phones hard drive.

If there is a better way maybe someone else can suggest?

The idea is to only keep the best pictures, and organize as you go. Kind of like your email. Otherwise you can hide all photos and only tag good photos for an album group. The auto book will be based off of your album. This is actually the way I use it. I have an album for my child sleeping. When I run across a cute one, I tag it for that album. Same picture could also go in an album for her and dad. Add as you go in life. Print when ready.

Exact same reason for transition, I loved Mac photo books too then went to Shutterfly for their ease in photo products and I used the share site as kind of a family and friend newsletter. When they improved their storage of photos I was thrilled and made it primary. I usually edit on my Mac before uploading to Shutterfly for more advanced editing.

I like that Shutterfly is free and independent of the big data giants.

Modes Shutterfly compress photos in a lower image quality the way Google Photos does?

I have not verified that this hasn't changed, but at one point they claimed to keep the highest resolution photo. I still keep key photos in original pixel format if they have special meaning. They are still better than the polaroids I also have.

I use Google Photos. It took a long while to upload years and years of photos but it was worth it to have everything organized by date. Then I made a chart of 12 months for each year and I go through them a month at a time during spare time and delete all the crap ones hogging up space or winnow down just the best of a series. It’s not overwhelming because I keep track of my progress and know I can pick it up and put it down as time allows.

I wouldn’t make google photos your primary archive. Unlimited uploads is reduced resolution; original res you need to pay for Google One.

We keep everything local in Mac Photos — currently 100k, though cleaning up some now. It’s pretty good at detecting duplicates at input and preventing, but not great about finding existing duplicates (such as same photo but different sizes).

Are you concerned about privacy? that is my biggest concern with google. I don't want to willingly handover EVERYTHING. They are already attempting to write my emails for me!
