Kitchen cabinets too high

The trend now is mostly bottom cabinets. We only have one upper cabinet for glasses. The rest is taken up by 4 windows and the range hood and fridge, wall oven, etc. We have huge bottom drawers with pegs that hold dishes.

I’m 5 4. Frustrated with how much organized space is out of my reach!

NP I”ll take you up on your offer to be a professional reacher.

We keep a step stool in the kitchen, mostly for our tween but also my mom uses it when she comes over.

18" from counter top is minimum I recall too (redo 2013).

there are no building codes that govern this, just recommendations

I’m 5’1” — this is why I married a man who is 6 foot and I borrow my 3 year old’s step stool all the time.

Obviously most of these replies are from men who think they are being cute and have never had this problem. So when she falls off the step and breaks her arm, neck or back should she sue the cabinet. There needs to be a better answer,

Same but I’m 5’1. I can only really reach the bottom shelf and maybe the second shelf for some easier things. We only have two upper cabinets in our large kitchen. Everything is on the bottom and it’s pretty glorious.

I’m just glad Dh is tall. I have the worst trouble in my laundry room reaching above my washer and dryer.

Do you ever watch Home Town? They had cabinets installed for a homeowner who was small statured. Basically Ben took a wooden ladder and cut off the supporting legs so that they rested on the counter. They hung the modified ladder to the side of the cabinets. I just tried to find a picture of it but can't. Sorry! Anyway it is an idea that would get you a little bit higher up than a traditional stepladder.

I also saw a sliding “library” ladder in a kitchen on Home Town.

My mom's kitchen has a folding stepladder that folds up and disappears into the toe kick underneath her counter. She's 5'1" and had a perfectionist kitchen designer.

Love this idea!

Check out the rev-a-shelf pull down cabinets. Expensive but for everyday stuff would work.

The builder saved money by purchasing standard cabinets but installing them high, to appear more high-end. End result is that you can really only functionally use the bottom shelf of the cabinet. BTDT.

Same exact stats here! Thank goodness for tall husbands and toddler stools!

Fix your cabinets! Geez people, see the forest for the trees. You probably don't need that many uppers anyway. I would consult with a kitchen designer or cabinet company and get a quote.
