Ummm, Arlington is a soccer club based in a community, not a community based soccer club. It generally serves the geographic area of Arlington but being a Arlington resident is not a requirement of joining ASA. |
Translation: Ummm, that's OK. |
| I think Braddock Road got rid of all their other teams when they started doing ECNL. |
OMG, no, BRYC did not get rid of their other teams when they joined ECNL. Their A teams just changed leagues. BRYC elite only had teams in CCL. Is this really this hard for people to understand? Arlington's A team simply plays in DA nad not CCL. The "Red" designation past U13 no longer means "A Team". At Loudoun, after U13 ECNL means top team and Red means B team. Neither club added a team, the top team just changed their name. |

The 04 and 05 girls have DA. They also have Red, White, and Blue teams. Do they have Black? Or did Black get dropped when the players moved up? Just curious.
|
| It would be a smart move on US Soccer's part to funnel the Arlington girls to Spirit VA instead of granting Arlington the older DA age groups, like what happens with the younger boys DA teams funneling to DC United. Would help consolidate talent in the club affiliated with the pro team (which US Soccer funds, so self-help) and would help address the girl talent dispersion issue in the area. The Arlington people would hate that though. As would the Spirit VA people whose kids would be displaced by the talent coming from Arlington. |
In time that may happen, but a few things need to happen first. 1. ECNL would need to be the clear cut second tier league. 2. NWSL would need to grow AND be profitable. But for now, DA needs to grow before it can contract. |
Red became DA and White became Red, Blue became White and on down the line. Nobody got moved up only the team names have changed. Also, going from U12 to U13 means going from 9v9 to 11v11 so it may appear that a team was dropped but in fact 9v9 rosters were simply merged to create 11v11 rosters. This can mean the same to more players even if it appears that there are fewer teams. |
Tell that to the Arlington parents who’s taxes pay for those fields but then they can’t get access to. |
ASA also pays taxes and pays for the fields. Being a resident does not guarantee a spot on a ASA team. ASA is not a County Department or organization that you are entitled to. |
If you want access to a Arlington County soccer field here is the link to rent one: https://parks.arlingtonva.us/rentals/rectangular-fields/ |
But, that isn’t exactly how it worked because not everyone on Red made DA (and many non Arlington players were added) and not everyone on White made Red, etc. So is there still a Black team, or were there not enough players to field a team? |
And that is what happens when kids tryout every year and outside talent comes in, sometimes you don't make the same team. But that does not mean Arlington added another team, it means a kid did not make the A team which is now called DA. |

Lower teams are profit centers that allow all these high salaries for DOC and TDs that are necessary to keep DA status.
They won't be dropped but squeezed further because switching from Red to DA for top teams adds practices and thus takes away field space. Lower teams get 1/8th of a field, as 6 teams get crammed into a field, with the top 2 teams sharing half a field. The plan would be to cut into that and put 8 teams sharing one field at lower age weekly practices, to free up fields for the required # of DA practices going on from boys + girls U12 to U19 DA when expansion happens. Basically, imagine Monday night skills every night for teams in younger age groups or lower on food chain. This is the price of DA FBOW. |
This is a problem at every program/county/city around the beltway- Stoddert plays home games at the soccerplaex, Bethesda younger kids practice in upper Montgomery County, etc. There are not enough fields for the demand. If you did not have ASA, the field would be used by someone else not you. You would complain about the flag frisbee leagues. Alexandria put turf down and added lights to most of their fields. Those fields are in constant use. Arlington needs to build more fields and be creative about it. |
