There is also a West Point that was left off. |
Yes, but Pitt is MUCH more popular this year. Last year only 10 went. And 11 went to Berkeley last year so to not see it on the list was a surprise. GA Tech looks popular again and W&M is less so. As someone who has 2 grads (15 & 17) I find this interesting. |
That's the US Military Academy (2) |
433 graduated last night. This college destination info is all self reported so there are kids that didn't list their colleges probably for privacy reasons since the TJ Today senior issue does identify by name the kids going to each college/university. I know several kids who are going to UVA but are not on the list so at least 75 are going to UVA. Considering that this was the toughest year ever to get into competitive colleges, the list is pretty impressive. In the halls of TJ, many considered this 2018 class stronger than last year's class. |
I know a couple of WM left off. And I agree. The names aren’t listed here, but they are available online once the senior edition goes live. Considering how much people pickover and analyze the TJ admissions list, I’m not surprised some kids opted against having their names and school listed, especially if they are the only TJ kid admitted. Interesting to see that several kids were listed as “their school (following a gap year)”. I really like the idea of a gap year for my DC after she graduates next year, especially if the College and Career Center could help hher find an internship in her area of interest. It has been a real grind, and I would love her to be able to take an academic break and do something different before heading back to school for another 4 years. Congrats to the Class of 2018! No doubt they are very smart and hardworking. But the TJ upperclassman impress me every year with how kind they are to underclassmen. Class of 2018 is a really, really nice group of kids. And I loved their 95 Theses on the way out the door. ![]() |
The TJ Today issue only lists college choices of 366 of the 433 that graduated. 99% are headed to college with remainder joining military or starting in business (with one starting his own avionics software company). |
To OP - I noticed the 75 to UVA and 32+ to Virginia Tech. That is an increase, isn't it? Isn't it usually 60 to UVA? This was a tough year for admission to Virginia Tech, so am curious if the TJ number is up. And I assume most of those are for engineering? |
Last year’s list was UVA 62 VT. 42 WM. 39 VCU. 10 GMU. 7 Given that some kids are missing, it looks like UVA is up, WM is down and VT, VCU, GMU basically held steady Berkley was the big one left off the list. Pitt was way up. GA Tech was way up. This year had 2-3 more kids go to several of the Ivy’s (Harvard, Yale, etc.), Plus, a few more Duke and Chicago. A few fewer to Michigan. A few more to UI-CU. Here is the 2017 list: http://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/649621.page And yes, kids who go to VT usually do engineering. Some do other specialized programs, like architecture or their environmental sciences program. |
Thank you. I don't have anyone at VT but have been watching the statistics change. So I'm right about a jump in UVA students - that comports with what I'm seeing across the board with VA schools - just a general increase in applications and rise in required stats to get in because the SLACs, LACs and private universities have price themselves out of affordability for most families. The TJ students attending GMU major in engineering or computer science, right? I have a DC who recently graduated from there. I understand the engineering, computer and econ departments are strong (DD was in another field). |
Hard to tell. I don’t know any of this year’s kids personally. But usually it is CS. Sometimes kids do mentorships with GMU faculty and stay. My understanding is that every class also has a few kids who need a commuter college for personal, medical or family reasons. |
Where do you find the 95 theses? |
If you are a TJ parent, the class of 2018 posted them on the class of 2020 FB Page. I would assume they are on the class of 2019 and class of 2021 FB pages as well. I did not see them on the parents page. Ask your kid, they will have a copy. DC said the seniors started at the front door on the dome and pasted thousands of copies all over the school. When Dr. B went started chasing them around and ordering them to stop (because heaven help that woman unclench and have a sense of humor), they got into her office and flooded it too. Class of 2018? Like all the other students in the school, not a fan of Dr. B. But they were awesome. Most of the seniors contributed, and they did a great job. Everything that is frustrating or annoying about the school and the new administration. DD came home and was reading them to me, and we were both like— This! If you are not a parent, IDK how you get a copy. But, you probably don’t care about them teaching intro bio out of the AP textbook, or no longer allowing music students to eat in the band room, or the screwy TJ math 3,4,5 sequence. |
Except for GPA, Naviance is self-reported, isn't it? So unless the kids actively remember to do it, the data won't be accurate. |
GMU is not a commuter school. It's the largest research university in Virginia and all freshman are required to live on campus unless they get a waiver. It has three campuses, 37,000 students and a new campus in Seoul, Korea. Its engineering, computer science and econ departments are especially strong. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Mason_University |
HI!!
since the senior issue seems to be the only issue any parent cares about, i, as a tj student who actually knows the staff, i will address some of your complaints. the aphorisms page is based on responses to a google form that's sent out too all seniors. they are all given plenty of time to respond, so if a student chooses not to fill it out, it's their choice! if they fill it out too late, the staff probably has already started putting the responses onto the layouts... which is not such a simple process! last year, i was told that only 200-something kids filled out the form, and now there's over 300. that's something, isn't it? also, unless you plan to scan the map page and upload it into some program that automatically scans/counts the number of kids going to each college, why does it bother you so much that the number in the parentheses is inaccurate? (it says 5 kids are going somewhere, when it's ACTUALLY 6! the tjtoday staff is all a mess, right?) tjtoday has put out manyyy issues out this year with a ton of great stories and if THIS is what you get hung up on, spend your time elsewhere or even better.... TL;DR: IF THIS ISSUE IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO YOU, PLEASE, I BEG YOU, EMAIL ADVISOR MS. HARRIS at EHarris1@fcps.edu!!! i'm sure she is superrrr passionate about discussing this! |
