Can 8lb babies wear newborn clothing/diapers? What’s the lbs cutoff for newborn?

My almost 8lb baby was never in NB

All three of my kids were right around 8 lbs. and all three wore newborn diapers and clothes for the first month or so. They could have worn the 0-3, but they would have been big on them. FWIW, my kids were all on the longer side (21-21.5 inches). So, although they were a decent weight, they kind of looked scrawny.

yes they can. however there are a lot of people who like their babies to swim in their clothes and diapers. if you are one of them they won't work for you.

My 8lb baby was too big for NB clothes and wore NB size diapers for less than a week. My 6lb baby wore NB clothes for about 3 weeks and NB diapers for about 2 weeks. Could have worn the pants a bit longer, but the sleepers and bodysuits were snug because both kids had long torsos.

My two eight and a half pounders wore newborn clothes for the first month or so. The 3 month clothes were huge!

My son was 7 lb at birth but he outgrew NB size around 8.5 lbs at 2 weeks old.

There is so much variation in sizing, even within a single brand sometimes. Gap newborn would definitely fit a 8 lb baby since they run large.

+1. Both my 8lb kids wore newborn diapers for a month and newborn clothes home from the hospital. Wore a lot of too-big 0-3 size stuff because everyone told us not to buy newborn sizes

My baby was 6.5 lbs but he grew extremely fast, especially in length (long torso), so he was in newborns for about 2 weeks, then in 1s until about 10 weeks.

My 9 lb 12 oz baby who was a chunky baby wore newborn for several weeks!

Sure 0-3m size “fits” but it is baggy and too loose in the snaps, meaning we are constantly adjusting from giving her wedgies, or her shoulders are escaping out the top. This is especially awkward for new grandparents to manage, right at the height of photo taking, meaning baby looks like she is constantly falling out of her clothes in snap shots. She’s two weeks old now, and I haven’t been well enough to run out to target to buy newborn sized clothes. Can you tell this irks me

Anyway, size 1 diapers are fine, but again, have lots of extra room and look overly puffy. We bought a a pack of newborn buggies and they fit so much better. The benefit of the size 1 is that it helps her stay in the too big clothes!

Really?

My 9 lb 9 oz baby did not fit in newborn diapers at birth!

Seriously, when they were cleaning him up and weighing him after he was born the newborn diaper was too tiny so they had to use size 1! I had a couple newborn outfits that I didn’t even bother to try on. We went straight to 0-3 month onesies and they fit snuggly. He was in 3-6 month clothes at 1 month though, and he continued growing fast the whole first year.

So, yeah it depends a lot.
Yes! Our nurse left the delivery room to go find a size 1 diaper. They were only stocked with newborn and it was too small. She was 9lbs 5oz. She did come home from the hospital in a newborn outfit, but that was the last time she wore it and it was a squeeze. She was in 0-3 for about 3 weeks before moving to 3-6 month clothing. She was a big kid.

Speaking of long and scrawny...my kid was 21 inches but only 6 and half lbs.

The newborn diapers were loose around the legs but didn't go up high enough so he had a lot of leaks.

It all depends on how long baby is. My DD was born at only 7’5”, but was 22 inches long and was never able to fit in newborn clothes so we always used 0-3 and they werenlose

Yeah, my 9.3lb DS wore newborn for at least a month, and he wasn’t skinny. Fit his cloth diapers right away too, although I didn’t really start using them until week three, when his cord had fallen off.
