Actually, depending on your family, this one makes sense to me. Lol. For every holiday, one of my relatives buys weird hats or headbands (like with antlers etc...) for everyone and wants us all to wear them. Every Easter. Every Christmas. |

I am the youngest in a large family. We didn't have a lot of money growing up (but we had what we needed.) I guess we didn't have enough mugs/glasses or something because we grew up eating root beer floats in bowls. When I was 16 my first job was at McDonald's where they had a Coke float promotion with glasses you could keep. That was when I realized floats in bowls isn't quite normal. I forgot all about it until a few years later when my SIL asked me how I consume root beer floats. I didn't eat them at all but knew why she was asking and got a good laugh because I had completely forgotten about that.
Every now and then my siblings and I will reminisce about the strange food we ate growing up...a hazard of having parents who were teenagers when they started a family. My mom sometimes served potato salad with spam as an entree. Nothing else, just that. Or banana boats...bananas wrapped in foil with chocolate chips and marshmallows and put in the fireplace for a while to melt everything. Lots of really bad food habits had to be unlearned as I navigated my way through adulthood. We also had a garden and ate vegetables, but we really had an alarming amount of crap in our diet. |
OP here, Omg. I thought my parents were the odd ones growing up.I had young parents with limited income but we were care for and loved.I hated holidays because my parents always host and it was always crazy.Too many people in a three bedroom house.Kids and adults screaming to hear each other.I used to hide in my bedroom and read until Lunch was served. Mom was known to serve non traditional Thanksgiving food to people who don't like turkey. We had Spaghetti, whole chicken, mixed vegetables, bread, turkey, spanich,Ethiopian dishes, fried rice, and etc.I appreciate my parents for hosting once I left home. Our house was the fun place to be for the holidays. |
So I must be hungry because the Banana Boats sound yummy! I am envisioning topping it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a dollop of whipped cream. |
