Is it worth it to pay out-of-state tuition for Berkeley?

Anonymous
My personal opinion is that away is always better than nearby when it comes to college. And Berkeley is a world class school.

Only if you are ok with paying for five years of college vs. four.

Do you have the money? Berkeley is amazing, but not worth a huge pile of debt. I also think it has a healthier student culture than UVA (less emphasis on drinking & greeks.)

If money isn't a problem Berkeley for sure.

Berkeley is a chance of a lifetime while UVA is more of the same.

We were in the same situation as yours, UVA (honor) vs Stanford. We decided to let DD to go to Stanford with CS major and we can afford the cost.

Omg op...

You can't compare Cal with UVA. Are you kidding me?!?!?!

If you have $, absolutely. If not, then your q is pointless.

If it causes financial hardship, then no.

Even if it causes financial hardship, then yes. Some things are worth the sacrifice. And my kid's education is one of them. If your kid was from Indiana deciding between these two schools and UVA was much cheaper, I might consider UVA. But for a kid from Virginia? UC Berkeley for sure.

That was me 30 years ago. My parents put us all through college and only had certain amount of money for tuition. When I looked at taking out loans to go to Berkeley versus the fact that my parents could pay in-state tuition outright at UVA, I chose UVA.

no, the margin between UVA and Cal is not worth significant financial sacrifice by the parents or child. A little extra student loan debt, ok. But not major debt, or harming your retirement savings.

Distance from home. Having few, if any, high school classmates attending the same university, experiencing a different region of the country...
